I think if CX had its way, they should seriously consider changing the current HKG-SFO-HKG flight from an A340-300 to the 747-400 by next summer.

I've just heard this from a second person. They also say they will `park' six passenger and two 747-200F's by early next year.

On a side note the flights between Hong Kong and London are over booked !!, I've heard this from three people in the past two weeks !, one flew Miami - Heathrow (FULL) and Heathrow - Hong Kong (FULL). The same person also flew a AirTran 717 to Miami and it had 7, yes 7 passengers !!.

Lets see.

Are these two acfts just before their schedule for D-check? CX may wanna save some $$ by parking them rather than having them checked since they are not that economic to operate according to someone in the forum.

From my recent flights (October/November) with CX I can tell the 744-flights were fully booked, the regional A330-flights only half full.
Why don´t they park some regional planes like 773s and A330?

I believe flying the A330 can be profitable with just flying cargo on the cargo deck, sooooo....flying with not many passengers but with a good amount of cargo is, I'm sure, profitable. Same goes with the A340.

I'm sure there must be somewhere else they can fly to.

In fact i really think they can make use their 744 better, I book MEL-HKG route 2 months before, it's a A330, but most of the dates which i want to book are full, from early Dec to mid Dec, and it's high season which is more expensive then SQ and QF about 300 AUSD, they are just earning a lot of money in this route i think, but they fly it with a A330

It is interesting to note your observations as I've had the same problem securing a seat in mid-December from Sydney to Hong Kong but with my Diamond Marco Polo Club membership, I am offered a Guaranteed Economy Class seat 24 hours before the travel date.

I agree that CX should use the Boeing 747-400 aircrafts to Sydney and Melbourne during peak season.

From my analysis, I think the reason why they use the new Airbus A330-300 aircrafts is due to the fact that the are installed with the new Business Class Sleeper Seats and the 4 A330-300's have inflight email and intranet service for passengers as well as new Studio CX in all classes (AVOD for First and Business Class) and not to mention widest sleeper seats in First Class.

If CX are to park 2 Boeing 747-400 aircrafts, they should send it to their maintenance base in Xiamen for retrofitting of the new Business Class and installation of inflight email, intranet and power outlets. They should take advantage of the opportunity in installing the product whilst business is slow.

I think CX are refofitting the 744's. However there is talk of the two leased 744's being returned newt year.

The source is me.....via a First Officer.

Apparently, Cathay are going to take the opportunity to do strut modifications on the aircraft while they are down at Avalon, and after that, they will go into storage. I am told that no 777s will be stored, so the other 4-5 aircraft will be Airbuses and maybe more -400s. Who knows?
