Qantas 744s To LAX

Mon Nov 26, 2001 9:55 am

Could anyone tell me which 744s QF flies into LAX from MEL, SYD, and AKL. Their website lists two different types of 744s.

Also, what is the status of PTVs installed in QF 744s? Way back, only 1 744 was fitted with PTVs, and was used primarily to LHR. Please tell me that more have been equipped.

Thanks in advance.

They fly the special Long Reach 744s to LAX and well as LHR I think.

All Qantas B744s are named Longreach. Due to the slightly different configuration, I think Lax sees the later OJs. VH-OJE is fitted with PTVs.

I just flew from SYD to LAX today as a matter of fact. I flew on VH-OED. Flight QF107, There were no PTV's on this aircraft in E/C however both B/C and F/C had them. I flew the same configured A/C last week Saturday night as flight QF108 (I was suppose to fly QF12 but got bumped off as the QF12 flight was full). QF108 was about 60% full in Y/C and maybe 70% in B/C. QF107 today had a load factor of probably 95 to 97%.

Qantas has specific planes for its LAX-SYD/MEL/AKL-LAX route. These have a little bit fewer seats for the long distance to make it just a little lighter. Of course, Qantas can change their setup and although these planes are used on this route 99% of the time, things change. But almost always, they use:

VH-OEB
VH-OEC
VH-OED
VH-OJI
VH-OJJ
VH-OJL
VH-OJP
VH-OJQ
VH-OJR
VH-OJS
VH-OJT
VH-OJU

And of course, the ones with "VH-OJ*" are the ones with the GE engines, not the RB-211 engines with the single engine pod.

I'm not sure which ones have the PTV's but I'm guessing, by now, half or so have them. I think that ALL Qantas 744s should have the PTV's by July 2002... but I'm not sure of the date. Definitely by mid-2002 though.

Hope this helps.

I made a mistake!

The QF 744s with VH-OE* are the ones with the GE engines, and VH-OJ* have the RB211's. Sorry!

With reference to the QF 744 seating charts:
Those with slightly more business class seats are usually rostered onto LAX and BUE routes.

Economy class PTV's are not a priority for these aircraft as the other competition (NZ, UA) do not have PTV's in their cabins.

Only 2 of the Qantas 747-400 fleet have PTV's fitted in the Y Class Cabin.

VH-OJE Kangaroo Config
VH-OJR Pacific Config

OJE Tends to operate between Aust & Europe, while OJR is mainly seen on routes to the USA.

Qantas plans to have all 747-400 aircraft fitted with Y Class PTV's by end of 2002.

Thanks

Whay do they use different engines?

Is it better for longhaul flights the 744 RR engined or the GE engined?

F.Pier,
there are a lot of threads, particularly in Tech/Ops on this exact subject that are very infomative!

If BUE is Buenos Aires that route actually uses a Kangaroo configuration aircraft. Buenos Aires is EZE!

The 3 with GE engines are ex OZ and MH aircraft also the new 747-438ER's will have GE engines!
