Runway Of 1066 Metres - Dash 8-300 The Biggest?

Tue Nov 27, 2001 12:55 am

Hi everybody,

I´ve been thinking about the runway at my home airport, Mannheim/Rhein-Neckar MHG/EDFM. The runway is only 1066 metres long, the biggest equipment used to far was a Dash 8-300, operated by Cirrus Airlines on behalf of Team Lufthansa.
Can it become any bigger? Or is this 50 seater the maximum? Any airliner jets - Avros perhaps, they´re designated STOL a/c? Is this the shortest runway Lufthansa and their franchise partners use?

Thanks,

Daniel Smile

A 146 or Avro of some sort could land on that length of runway no problem. I suspect there isn't enough demand for one though.

Shame Daniel that an operator wouldn't introduce a 146 service. Certainly where I live in the North of England (Leeds) there would be strong demand due to the high number of German ex pats (mainly Doctors/pharmacutical workers).
I have two friends from Hockenheim, one from Heidelberg and they would certainly use a service to Mannheim rather than FRA.

Pipe dreams I suppose!!

yes, Avros should make it easily out of MHG. i believe FLR´s runway isn´t much longer in they manage to do so with quite some loads all the time.

btw, this is not necessarily civilian aviation-related, but perhaps it is of some concern.
in the town where i live, there´s a small airfield catering for Cessnas and Pipers and Mooney, and its runway length is a mere 800m and the Bundeswehr (German air force) sometimes brings in some Transall which are fully loaden and take ´em fully loaden. imo, that´s quite impressive since last time a checked, the Transall is not that little an airplane.
