Lufthansa On Detroit - Frankfurt

How do you think Lufthansa will do against Northwest on this route?

Probably very well. First, the service is better than Northwest's. Second, there's great demand between auto industry centers in Detroit and Germany. Third, LH's function is different. LH offers Detroit passengers vast connections through Frankfurt, Northwest does not. Likewise, NW offers connections in Detroit that would benefit Europeans. I think there's room for both.

NWA operates DC-10s exclusively in and out of Frankfurt. Every one I've been on smells like a car repair garage (fuel, oil, etc...). I don't know if that's worse than the musty smoke smell of LH's planes, but the German airline is certainly flying a better fleet.

well first!
at fra i was talking to an ex twa agent the other day saying "well once the company get its 777s well be a OK! and then twa will fly back into Frankfurt. well i didn't have the heart to tell the man (he wasn't kidding about the 777's) it wasn't 777 its 717s

why doesn't nwa use there 747-400s going to fra.
and whats wrong with the old smell of an old aircraft! i love it.

Lufthansa uses the A340 on this route to answer CX747's question. Northwest doesn't have a large fleet of 747-400's and as a result can not deploy them in as many places as it would like. That is why on several Asian routes, passengers fly 747-200's, European routes DC-10's.

I agree with the previous comments about LH having the lead into European flights via fra and NWA's lead to US flights thru Detroit. I dont agree with the "smokey" odor of LH planes though. First of all LH is an all smoke-free airline and second is that whether you fly a 20 yr old 747-200 or an all-new A340-300, LH planes are always very clean and well maintained. Even though I find the food and comfort (on Business Class) to be pretty average, the FAs are profesionnal (little cold usually!). Whereas to NWA, they dont stand a chance competing with LH, food is very poor quality, planes are filty and old and the airline overall, a near-disaster...

I love the smell of cigarette smoke on planes. Well, not the smoke, but the smell of the previous flight's smoke. If that makes any sense. Lufthansa economy class isn't all that amazing, although I'd take an A340 over a DC10 for comfort any day. NW have nevr deployed 747-400s on the Atlantic, it was 747-100s and -200s, and now more and more DC10s.

Actually, Northwest Airlines flies one of its 747-400s DTW-AMS and then AMS-DTW. Flights 67/68 I think. To clear it up, NW has 9 747-400s.
