Why do British Airways' narrowbodies, the 757 and 737, have that ugly black ring around the nose?

I have noticed this also. Mainly on the 757 more then the 737. The old paint scheme used to cover it up. I have ask a buddy of mine that flies the 757 he does did not know so he asked a maintenance person and they came up with the conclusion it has to with the weather radar what it does they do not know. Also it is not paint it is left as is which raises other questions why it can not be painted.
