CO Planned On 744

Wed Nov 28, 2001 1:42 pm

Did you know that CO planned to get 2 SIA 744s in the mid-1990s? I just found this out. Did anyone know why they cancelled?

I think airlines like AA, DL, and CO don't need an aircraft of the 744's size. They may have cancelled when the 777 came out and they saw it was more fit for them than a larger 747.

Thats the first I've heard of that and I've dealt with a number of people in CO management who work on the fleet planning side. What is your source on this, and what was the timeframe?

I've heard this rumor before. Last time I heard it was in the fall of 1996 from another CO employee. He told me that CO was indeed interested in 747-400s but no more than probably 4. Like someone else said, when the 777 came about, it made better sense.

My source is http://aerotransport.free.fr/Airlines/a70913.html at the bottom of the page. The exact text is "B.747-412 2 ex-Singapore AL ntu reportedly intended (6/98), ntu."

The words "reportedly intended" means that someone heard a rumor.

I specifically discussed the 747-400 case with a VP of Continental earlier this year and he said that they never took it seriously, so I was very surprised to see this info. Thanks for clearing up that it was just a rumor.
