Fuel Prices Drop, But Most Airlines Keep Surcharge

Saw this Associated Press article in the Dallas Morning News today:

Most airlines opting to keep fuel surcharge
Despite drop in prices, carriers say fee is needed to offset losses

This reminds me of the federal government. Initially federal income taxes were supposed to be temporary, to help pay for the costs of World War II, but of course, that war ended 56 years ago and we're still paying.

I understand that most of the airlines are losing money, but they should just drop the fuel surcharges and raise the basic ticket price. To me, this is just another example of how airlines gouge passengers on cit pairs where they don't compete with Southwest.

To Delta's credit, at least they only charge $10.00 per one-way ticket as opposed to $20.00 that most of the other airlines charge.

The above article mentions that Southwest is the only major airline that doesn't have a fuel surcharge. What about some of the smaller airlines like jetBlue and Frontier?
