Why Air France Asie Or British Asia Airways?

Sat Jul 24, 1999 11:50 am

Hi! I just have two questions that maybe they are silly but... Why is it that many airlines have those names like: "British Asia Airways" "Japan Asia Airlines" "Air France Asie" "Qantas Asia Airways" and so much more? Why they need to change their paint schemes? What is the Asia thing standing for? Thank you in advance! Joaquín México City / Ciudad de México

This is because the restriction placed by the communist PRC government of China Mainland. This rule restricts airlines from flying into both Mainland China and Taiwan, so Airlines flying into Taiwan has to set up subsidaries to prevent breaking the law. SO there are KLM Asia, British Asia Airways, Air France Asie, Japan Asia Airways and the closed subsidary of Qantas--- The Australian Asia Airways. These Airlines are used only to fly to Taiwan

Good question! However, I am still unclear about this too. Many airlines flying out of North America seem to not need to bother with these restrictions, why? For instance, Canadian Airlines (CP) flies to both Taipei and Beijing... No need for them to set up a "Canadian Asia Airways". How exactly does this whole thing work about needing subsidaries just to fly to both Taiwan and the PRC and is it still active?

As Trent is I am still unclear about this whole "Asia" thing. This airlines as I can see are only European and the Australian Qantas. Tha fact of being an European airline means you are supposed to change or make a subsidiary if the airline wants to fly to China or Taiwan? As Trent is asking why the North American airlines don´t have the "Asia" things in some of their planes? A3XX Thank you for your first reply! I would appreciate very much if someone can answer this questions. Again thank you in advance! Joaquín   Mexico City / Ciudad de México

Are these planes really just used for flights to Taiwan and China? About 2 years ago I flew on an Air France Asie A340 from Washington DC to Paris

More info:
Airlines that are set up by the government or state-owned MUST use different name when travelling to Taiwan. Sometimes, since there must be a surplus of aircraft by these 'XX' Asia airlines, sometimes they fly on their owner's flight.
