Why Oh Why Did Swissair Collapse?

Thu Nov 29, 2001 7:44 am

Here is an interesting article by the BBC with audio interviews of Swissair employees;

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/audiovideo/programmes/crossing_continents/newsid_1677000/1677085.stm

A clip:

Is the article accurate, or misleading?

The BBC article sums it up all nicely. Swiss insularity coupled with arrogance are what lead to Swissair's demise. Once again Icarus flew too close to the sun.

Well upon a recent visit to LHR (Nov.1) i saw 2 Swissair, 1 A320 and 1 A321 and they were both fully functional! Also, around 3-4 days ago i saw a Swissair A330 fly past my house heading West out towards US/Canada.....Is Swissair completely gone????

Is it true that Swissair wanted to be a global carrier? I think so. In fact, they formed the first major global alliance with Delta and Singapore Airlines, though, not a successful one.

Is it true that Swissair failed mostly due to their bad investments? I think so, too.

However, I don't necessarily agree that Swissair made those bad investments because they wanted to be a global carrier.

IMHO, Swissair made those bad investments because they felt a need to get a foothold in the EU market, as Switzerland is surrounded by the EU but is not a member of the EU. Other than SAA, all their major investments were in airlines in the EU. Without a strong presence in EU, they would likely to disappear, too, but probably later. They were in a no win situation.

I think a man named Katz bastardized the airline.

It is sad that the first thing that you see on the tarmac upon arrival in ZRH is a procession of MD-11s shuttered and devoid of their PWs. Also noticed some narrows coralled in the distance (operational or not??). Sad to see of one of the very best. Crying

Katz wasn't there long enough to do that much damage and even if problems did arise under his leadership, the new management had more than enough time to correct Katz's actions. I'd put SR's problems down to infallible Swiss arrogance.

To Sum It Up In One Name...

Fri Nov 30, 2001 1:42 am

...because of Mr. "worst-airline-superasshole-manager-of-all-times-worldwide" P. Brugiesser. That sums it up quite nicely. Of course, the reasons mentioned are correct, too, but if you ask in each case, why it was done that way, you'll come back to the man with the somewhat longish name.

Bad investments, strange vision, new economic realities (EU and CH not being a part of it), declining service, they are given another chance as part of Crossair, I hope they will not blow it again.
