When Did You First See A 747?

Thu Nov 29, 2001 6:39 pm

Why was Qantas the first aircraft to land in BHX?
I found this great pic but am abit baffled as to why 'Qantas' was the first instead of the likes of BA or KLM, etc....can anyone enlighten me?

Besides seeing pic's of the plane in books and in movies/TV the first real 747 that I saw was a PIA 747-200 taking off from Karachi we were pretty close to the runway at the time and since there wasnt any buildings around the area at the the time in I think in 1977 we got a clear view, but it was a bit disappointing as I did imagine it to be really "Jumbo" which it was not Smile

In 1989 in VIE it was a 747SP of Iran Air. Quite impressive and now a rare sight.

Quite probably the QF diverted from LHR and MAN must also been fogbound as well seeing that they normally divert here!

Reading through the history of MAN, there are numerous instances of first visit of type when they diverted from LHR, which links to this next paragraph!

We've just celebrated the silver anniversary of Concorde's first appearance at MAN, arriving as the BA578 I believe. When it departed the following day, the noise levels were apparently lower than a 747 which left immediately before it!

I saw it first in Zagreb in late 70's. ZAG was an alternate airport for BEG, and of course, it was Quantas.
After that, it wasn't that rare, at least once or twice a month.
ZAG is not a big airport, and there's no regular flights with 747's.
Up to now, I saw: Quantas 747-100, Lufthansa 747-200 and 400, Air China 747-400, PanAm 747-100, Tower Air (quite frequent in early 90's), Iran Air Cargo, Air France cargo, Saudia, AF1, and there's probably more jumbos used for UN and NATO during the 90's, but I can't remember them all...

Sounds weird for you guys from the "big" airports, but 747 is still quite a sight here in ZAG...

Ok, while we are on the topic, what was the very first 'aircraft' you saw in your home airport?
umm, mine was actually the Concorde, my dad took me down to EGFF when i was about 7yrs old and she was there doing a special flight to the bay of biscay and back, i loved it and have never took my eyes of a plane since!

Air India 747 VT-EDU parked at Gate 12, Pier B at MAN on 16th October 1977 having diverted from LHR! Okay, there were BA 1-11s parked nearer the spectator's terraces but that's the one that sticks in my mind as the tail was the first bit of a plane I saw!

Must admit it was a bit of a shock to see how few planes were on the ground the next time I went to MAN: around 10 opposed to the 40 to 50 on that 1st visit!

An Atlas Air 747-400 lumbering into MEM on a cold day. I know it had the same approach speed as all the other jets I see go by but it looked like it was just barely creeping along. An illusion caused by it's massive size I assume.

That was in 1983,I departed ARN for Las Palmas on a SAS 742 "Bjarne Viking". It was the most awesome thing
I had ever seen and to get to fly on it was even better!
I remember as I was only six years at that time I showed all my friends at school a picture of me coming down the stairs from that big plane. Boy they were green in their faces of envy  Big thumbs up

Hi!

First time I saw a 747 it was in when TAP received their first one in the far year of 1972, CS-TJA. TAP eventually ordered 4 brand new 747-200's from their extremely popular route to Africa ( Angola and Mozambique ) and the type fitted perfectly, CS-TJA and TJB stayed until 1984 with TAP but CS-TJC and TJD where just after the revolution leased and latter sold to PIA, TJA and TJB latter passed to TWA as N301TW and N302TW.

I can't remember the exact year it was (I was just a little tyke!), but it was in the early 80's, probably 83.

It was at Renschler Field, the airfield at Pratt and Whitney's main manufacturing plant in East Hartford, CT.

They used to have airshows every now and then, and I distinctly remember walking up to an AA 747 (just goes to show how long ago this was!) and thinking how BIIIIG it was.

Unfortunately, AA ditched their 747 fleet, and Renschler Field is no more, and is currently being dug up and turned into a football stadium for UConn
Excuse me, but what does God need with a starship?

My first 747 was an Atlas Air 747-228F I saw it in March 1999 at IAH. It was huge!! I saw two more 747s that day, a KLM 747-406M and a British Airways 747-436. Awsome!

In POS, Trinidad - it was a BA 747 Classic. That would have been around 1977. Oddly enough I thought that a DC3 (possibly Venezuelan) which was sitting on the tarmac on a previous airport visit was a "Jumbo with propeller" - I then thought that Jumbo referred to the growl of piston engines and not the sheer size of 747! Anyway, I saw many other BA and later KLM 747s in POS for several years after that.

Hi all thank you all for your kind words regarding the Qantas pic I took.
It was a publicity flight by Qantas and as you can see by the amount of people on the golf course they did a great job of it ..

The flight came in and departed back to Heathrow btw

It was 1971. AA brought a "Fat Albert" into SAN
on an oil charter. They had publicized it all over the
radio and TV. I remember waiting 4hours in line to
walk through the massive jet as it was the first
B747 ever in SAN. What a sight. I remember thinking
though, what a waste of time, 4hours waiting for
a 30second tour of the aircraft. Those were the
days of wonder in our youth.

I remember it was a very special day. We went to our weekend house at the beach, about one hour away from Barcelona.

From the highway near the airport I saw the typical 747 hump rising over the rest. I asked my father to divert to the airport to see my first 747, but he denied...

I was very frustrated and near my tears! Some weeks later my father brought me to the airport on another Saturday and there it was finally:

747-100 of TWA flying JFK-BCN-JFK

I was 13 years old and and it was back in 1978. I still have a photo standing on a parking lot with the Jumbo in the background.

I took this shot a few years later:

I remember my first 747 sighting vividly, although it has now been almost 30 years ago. I believe it was spring of 1972.

I was driving toward TUL from the south on SH-11, and I could see an AA 747-100 (passenger version) sitting on the cargo apron on the south end of the airport. I hurriedly got to the parking lot next to 36R (unfortunately the lot was later closed - it now has a cargo operation on it), and waited for takeoff. Lucky for me the wind was out of the north, and I got to see the plane taxi right by me, no more than 50 yards away. I then saw the most beautiful takeoff I have ever seen. It's something I hope I never forget.

I never figured out what the plane was doing there. I thought it might be a charter, but I guess it will just remain a mystery.

I learned something that day: there is NO takeoff like a 747 takeoff.

My first sight of a Jumbo was a Pan Am bird gliding in for a landing while I was living on the outskirts of Amsterdam (Buitenveldert). And that 11-year-old thought DC-8s and 707s were big! My first flight was in 1971, a Pan Am 747-121, JFK-AMS, Clipper Derby. Man, that thing towered over our ramp bus (the Pan Am Bldg. couldn't handle widebodies at the time). The two-story air stair and the wide interior with row upon row of seats; I was astounded.

I remember seeing Pan Am Clipper Don MacCay and KLM's first Jumbo, a glistening white PH-BUA, Amazon (the first -200B to cross the Atlantic).

My 1st sight of a 747 was of a Pan Am around 1970/71 when I was 9 years old whilst at school in London. The class was totally silent as the teacher was talking & I was sitting next to the window (as I always did), then at the top of my voice I yelled "look a Jumbo". Total mayhem broke out as every kid in the class ran to the window to have a look at the 747. The teacher was not impressed with me!

My 1st close up was in June 1971 at Shannon. I was boarding a BAC-111 via the rear stairs & there was an Aer Lingus 747 parked next to us. I remember it clearly as there was an engineer standing in the engine. I couldn't believe how big the 747 was. This would have been either EI-ASI/J.

Daks. The 747 you saw at DUB in 1977 could not have been EI-BED as this was not delivered to them until 1979. Either your date was different, or it was one of the EI 747's that I saw back in 1971.

Ned.

Dan

Can't quite remember the precise routing, think it stopped off in a couple of places (AMS + ???) as well as MEL and SYD. 1st service (1st April 1983) had the dubious pleasure of Rod Hull and Emu to greet the passengers! (Sidenote: Australia had to give traffic rights to BA to fly to Darwin - and Perth? - in order for QF to fly to MAN)

It then became a LHR appendage, I can remember it being a 3 weekly service in the late 1980s/early 1990s and then a daily service. MAN was voted as having QF's best executive lounge in 1993/4 then the dark forces became involved with them and we ended up with a BA 737 flying between MAN and LHR in winter 1994, only for that to be stopped as "it was competing with the shuttle service".

First sighting of a 747 in Brisbane in 1977 I think - a reverse of the original post of the QF in BHX. This was a BA 747 - the first for me. I was about 4 years old. Just about all of Brisbane came to the airport to watch the arrival of this giant!

Can't remember, lived under the flightpath in Sydney and 747s were there before I was. First ones I was aware of were the daily Pan Am SPs which were shorter and my Dad had flown to the US on a couple of those, I remember seeing him off at the airport with Mum. I think someone else posted an almost identical thing here, how they remember their dad taking the nonstop SP in the 70s from SYD and thinking it was pretty hot stuff...?

First ride in a 747 was when we moved to England from Aus, as soon as Mum told me we were moving I was excited cos it meant a ride in a jumbo at last (I was 11 by now), actually moving to a new country 12,000 miles away, forever, didn't phase me at all. All I could think was, I'M FINALLY GOING ON A 747.

It was 1971 or 1972 and I was a small boy, when my parents took me to Duesseldorf airport. One of the most impressive things I saw in my life was when a Condor 747-230B was about landing overhead of us while my dad was looking for a parking place. That was the very moment I became a aircraft fan - and a 747-enthusiast.

Airmale, the 747 is a very large jet, you probably were'nt as close as you say you were. When you're close to a 747, you can't just blurt out that it is not a true jumbo.  Big grin

Well, then what do you call jumbo?

The C5-A and An-124 are not that much larger than a 747 by total size, especially by looking at them sitting by each other.

First time I can remember is probably at IAH in 1992 when I was 6.

Contrails : No great mystery. TUL has been the main maintenace base for AA for many years.

Airmale: The 747 not big? It's first nickname was "The Messiah". Came from the journalists given the tour. The first reaction was invariably "Jesus Christ"! True story.

Religious people, please do not slam me for stating a fact.

The first 747 I saw was the one I flew in. I was 9 years old on a flight from MNL-ORD with a stopover in Tokyo. Awesome! Double pleasure!
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!
