Spotting At Papeetee?

Fri Nov 30, 2001 5:00 am

Hi all

I am going to be in Papeetee in December, and I am wondering if anyone knows what days the Corsair, AOM/AirLib and Hawaiian Air flights fly into PPT? Apart from these, and Air Tahiti Nui and Air NZ, are there any other international airlines serving PPT? If so, what and when?

Also, what kind of domestic ops are there from Papeetee. Anything interesting?

Cheers

Why don't you just check out the timetables of the airlines you mentioned???????

Bye!

I was there in 1997. I found that most of the interesting arrivals from Europe and North America tended to arrive at PPT in the early hours of the morning or late at night.

You might have better luck with the Air Tahiti ATRs which seem to come and go throughout the day. I do recall though it was better getting to PPT early in the morning to catch the morning 'rush' of ATR departures. The only other airline you did not mention was Air France. I am not sure whether there are any other operators. QF used to fly there but do not any longer.

There was an observation deck at PPT but was closed after the well publicised riots in Tahiti in 1995.

CanadairRJ - I attempted looking at online timetables - but only Hawaiian Air provided me with any answers (arives friday afternoon, leaves early hours sunday morning). I am still interested to know if anyone else operates there.

Thanks for any help

I am pretty sure Qantas flys their B767-300s into there also. Not so sure when though.

No Qantas don't fly there anymore - they codeshare on Air Tahiti Nui (A340) and Polynesian (738) from Auckland.

Most flights do arrive at night.

To add to your list of airlines, you have of course Air France with 744s, Polynesian with 738s (with winglets too!) and Lan Chile 2-3x a week with 763s.

PPT also has a lot of charters. When we were leaving there on a Lan Chile flight to Easter Island there were no less than 3 (!) HA DC-10s at the airport. Two were operating charters to LAX and the other was grounded after doing a dive into the bay at the end of the runway!

As for spotting. The view from the terminal itself is non-existant. However i would imagine good views are to be had from elsewhere.

Good luck, because there seems to be only 3 pics of PPT on the database...

A bit the topic, but I flew into PPT in January 1977 on a UTA DC-10 from LAX, leaving LAX about 11 pm, arriving about 5 or 6 am. I then flew out a few days later at 3 am on an Air New Zealand DC-10 to AKL. (That flight originated in LAX the evening before)

During my stay in Tahiti, I flew to Moorea on a BN Islander -- about a 15 minute flight from PPT.

Cheers,

I found spotting to by quite tricky at PPT. Only managed to get a few photos - and mostly through glass windows. They did turn out really well though - have not tried to post these on A.net.

Air Moorea have a separate terminal which is right next to the main terminal. This is pretty much an 'open air' terminal which might afford some better photos. You should be able to get photos of the Air Moorea a/c there as well. The twotters and BNIs fly back and forth from Moorea (it is an 8 minute flight over the Sea of the Moon from Moorea (MOZ) to PPT).

We flew on one of these flights - MOZ to PPT in 1997 which was amazing. The tiny little airport in MOZ was practical, yet basic.

PPT was undergoing a significant upgrade at the time. The terminal was not air conditioned then and there was lots of scaffolding around. The waiting areas were fairly basic - the seats were plastic and not that comfortable. The check-in area was also remarkably small, considering the airport receives large passenger aircraft.

We arrived on QF on a 767-300 at about 11pm - pulled in next to a Lan Chile 767-300. We took over an hour to get through immigration, even though we were the only international flight which was being processed. There were 2 immigration officials on duty at the time. The airport tried to make the experience (in the heat and humidity) more bearable by placing a traditional Tahitian band in the immigration hall. They were playing us songs from their homeland the whole time we stood in line.

All passengers were given a lei of Tahitian tiare flowers which were absolutely gorgeous in scent. It is this flower which adorns the tail of the Air Tahiti Nui A340.

Having said that, Tahiti - French Polynesia was a fantastic place for a visit.

I've been there back in 97. OK spotting is possible even if it's not really that interesting. There's a restaurant on first floor of the main building at PPT where you can 'open' sliding windows. It's possible from there to take some good pictures with sun behind you but sadly this position is in the transit area and therefore you will need a boarding pass. Also I suggest to take a flight package (Air Tahiti/Air Morea) to visit other islands where you will be able to take nice shots with great backgrounds (BOB-Bora Bora as an example).
