Small Plane Lands On Freeway In Berkeley

Sun Jul 25, 1999 4:28 am

This just in from a friend driving to SFO...a Cessna had an engine power failure and landed on I-80 Eastbound...the two people were fine, and the pilot only had his license for 6 mos...You'll probably see more later on during the 5:00 news!

I remember about 6 or 7 years ago a 172 landed right on the Bayshore freeway (101) northbound at Peninsula Ave! I was merging on right behind him!

When i first started flying the instructor told me not to land on roadways. Ive never done it and never intend to. He said just find a flat open spot where i can land safely. The advantage i have of living in Colorado is that we have plains east of us for as long as you can see. I dont know about Cali and their land, but im just doing what my instructor told me.

The plane suffered minor damage because some car in front of the plane slammed on the brakes when it saw the plane behind it. Probably just reflexs, but still...that is pretty darn stupid! The plane had to swerve to avoid the vehicle, and grazed the center divider, and then stopped with its nose angled down, or at least so I heard on KCBS. The pax walked away.

My former flight instructor landed a twin Cessna on Interstate 84 in the middle of the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon a few years ago. He and his student were on a flight from Northern Idaho to Troutdale, Oregon (TTD) when they ran out of fuel and had to set down on the freeway. He claimed his student forgot to fill up in Idaho before the flight and he didn't notice the fuel gauges reading empty. No one was hurt and the airplane only received minor damage. Needless to say, he wasn't an instructor for much longer. True story...
