End Of Domestic Widebody Service For NWA

Will we soon see the end of widebody domestic service on NWA. If thats the case NWA will be the only US airline not offering widebody service domestically

You mean the use of the dc-10? Since all those routes will be 753 i guess. Hmmm, I wonder if NWA will order some other kind of widebody. Thats so sad. Maybe it will use a few A330's or something, but I doubt it. A 753 is as big as a 7623 though.

I couldnt see NW stoping DC-10 service to cities like SFO, LAX, PHX... Travel demand is so high in cities like that, especially PHX with a limited amount of non stops. I do see the DC-10 into MKE being converted to a 753 though. Never really understood that one to begin with. Well NW is pretty large at MKE, almost beats out YX?

If Northwest retired all airplanes except the DC9, they would have only the DC9 left. Wow.

No, when the A330's arrive, they will take the DC-10-30's off trans-Atlantic.
The -40's will be retired.
DC-10-30's will take the -40's spots on domestics & Hawaii along with 753's to be put on domestic to.
Currently, NW has cut a lot of domestic DC-10 flying due to a reduced schedule, but the -30's are still in the fleet for some time to come 2004+.

Widebodies...Widebodies...Widebodies...

Whats the deal? They take forever to board and deplane, they effect inflight service qualities on short flights, they hog the flight schedule rather than having 5 flights, they make 1, they put stress on F/A's for short flights, your bags take forever to get off the belt from MSP-MEM which can be long, and on and on and on. They are unnecessary for domestic service. International, I see the need, but for interstate travel, this is great news about no more widebodies.

I feel more comfortable on a widebody on a 4hr + domestic flight than i would cramped in a 752 for that amount of time.

I prefer widebodies too; much more comfortable, and also less affected by turbulence with all that extra weight. Every time I fly in a 757 I get bounced around like a basketball.

Even when the NWA DC10s are gone and replaced with the A330s and 753s, it is likely that we will see the larger A330 on some selected routes that require the seats, say, MSP/DTW to LAX, or some inter-hub services between MSP, DTW and MEM. A comparison can be made to CO, CO does not in general use its wide-body aircraft on domestic routes, but you will find 767s on certain segements between EWR and IAH and IAH and LAX - much has to do with aircraft scheduling and rotations and the like, plus demand for seats.

NW's new 753s will replace many DC10 route segments domestically, it may not be a wide body (honestly, in today's configurations, narrow and wide bodies tend to be equally uncomfortable.......the days of wide-body comfort are long gone) but the 753 is much newer and much cheaper and much more enviornmentally friendly. to fly.

since when are 757s cramped??? Why do people always call them cramped? They have the exact same seats as do other airliners in the fleet. If the wall is too close to you when its at least 3 seats and an aisle away from you, and the other at least 2 seats... then you need help. a 3-3 seating arrangement is not cramped. Its not like the seats are smaller because the aircraft is smaller... way to think

I don't think the seats are what they are saying feel cramped.. I think they mean the plane itself feels cramped.

I myself prefer widebodies as well... they do feel like they have more room- keyword being feel... I think it has something to do with the cabin itself being larger and not the seats. I much rather be on a 767 on a three+ hour flight then a 757. I like the 757, but its nicer to me on shorter routes like LAX to LAS instead of LAX to ATL.

If NWA does discontinue widebody service in 2-3 years that would have a ripple effect more than anyone has thought.

Many freight forwarders use NWA for freight into MSP, MEM, BOS, LAX, and SFO. This will give the other carriers a monopoly on some routes regarding freight forwarding.

The cost of business would increase and other issues would arise dealing with service.

Just my two cents

That being said about being cramped on a 757, I can't imagine being on a CO 738 on EWR-LAX.

NWA is very good at making level headed and financially conscious decsions. NWA will not leave a fuel guzzling widebody inservice if more money can be made flying fuel efficient 757s. NWA (and every other airline) does not make its fleet decisions based on what members of this forum would think to be "cool" or "fun". NWA is working hard to deliver an efficient, and reliable product while making money, so they will take steps to ensure this happens.

NWA DC-10 To MKE

In response to Afitch's question of NW's DC-10s to MKE- I wonder what NW will do with the route... they may end up having to add an extra evening flight between MSP and MKE. I travel MKE-MSP-MKE on NW very often and the evening DC-10 is almost always FULL (or as near as I can tell to being full). On the other hand, their DC-9 and 752 service in the mornings and evenings are normally very light. I'd be suprised if NW doesn't add an additional flight to make up for fewer seats... or maybe people will just have to take the earlier flights. I'll be sad the see NW's DC-10s leave MKE, its one of the best A/Cs to see at MKE which is infested with DC-9s (soon 717s!)...

No problem on a 738 from Newark to LAX...or on a 757 or 747. I fly frequently on an A319 from Dulles to San Diego and Seattle. It's like any other plane. I mean, no one plays frisbee or runs laps while in the air. Take a good book or your lap top on which to work and every flight....no matter what aircraft....is the same. Except in sex, size doesn't matter.

That is not true. Even though they are retireing most DC-10's they are saving a few for Hawaii and Tokyo routes. And I also think that they might use a few A330's for domestic routes.

When the economy bounces back and delays and packed planes start making headlines again, you are going to see the government lean on the industry to reduce flights and increase the size of the planes.

The trend towards smaller planes and more flights is an inefficient use of air and runway space.

All they have to do is increase landing fees for small planes and cut them for the widebodies.

If a flight lasts more than 2 hours, EVERY narrowbody is crap compared to a widebody. If you ask me, I prefer a well-maintained 20 year old DC-10 over a new long thin 753! The 753 takes sooo long to board, that some people will have problems to get served during a short flight.

I've always found the service on a narrow body--up front and in the main cabin--to be better than on a widebody. I guess with only one aisle, the f/a can't help but notice you more....

Na.. the 753's will be boarded/deplaned through 2 doors.... as are the DC-10's. Everybody has to go through the same amount of doors... thus... same amount of time.

NWA DC-10 To MKE

I live in MKE, and I always love to see the DC-10 come in in the evening and leave the next morning. You don't see to many widebody jets here at MKE. And if that one leaves there will be none. I really never knew how full that DC-10 was but from what IROW says it must be pretty full. But you know if they bring a 753 to MKE, that will be nice to see, but I think the DC-10 is better.
