They NEVER served at Midway. They are at O'hare though. What went through your mind to think up a question like that? That's kind of a good question.

Actually they did serve Midway. I believe in the late 80s and early 90s they had 737 service to Denver from Midway.

Hey Mr. Know-it-all, I just thought of something, at one point they had to have served MDW, ORD wasn't always the main airport in Chicago. But then again I'm sure you knew that!!!!!!!! Right????? And I still think I recall them serving MDW for a little bit a couple years ago....anybody else remember?

I'm fairly certain it was the early 90s. If anyone has a timetable from then we could verify it. But I'm 99% sure I remember seeing it in print, MDW-DEN: 737

United Air Lines served Midway airport until the temporary discontinuation of scheduled service in 1962. When DC-8's, B-707's and CV-880's were introduced, they couldn't use MDW's short runways, so while MDW was the world's busiest airport in 1959, by 1961, all the airlines EXCEPT United had pulled out and moved all service to ORD. United was the last airline to pull out of Midway. Three years later, in 1965, UA reintroduced service to MDW from LGA with 727's and from DCA with Viscounts. There were also flights to other cities including MLI during this period.

Some service to MDW remained until the first Arab Oil embargo in 1974. United reinstituted service to MDW in the late 80's or 90's, and had flights to DEN, and IAD, both UA hubs.

The service was later discontinued.

I thought they ended Midway in 1987... but before that they had 737-200, 737-300 and 727-100 service to DEN.

I don't get why UAL does not try MDW. MDW is more convientley located to central Chicago and less congested than O'Hare (though I've never been to MDW and have not heard good things about it). By serving MDW, they just give all the frequent fliers in the area a second choice to get to thier destination. American Airlines does a similar concepet out of FLL, by serving their most popular O&D destinations (LAX, LGA, ORD, DFW, NAS, FPO, RDU, SJU, CCS, BOS) from MIA out of FLL, offering local travelers an easier way of flying.

right now midway is a disaster zone. I doubt there is any room for another airline at Midway until they finish their terminal rebuild / concourse construction.

When it's done though, it will be much nicer place to fly from. MDW was a disaster before the construction from a passengers point of view, anyone who's had to sit in an MDW waiting area knows what I mean.

Also, AA serves DFW from MDW and seems to do OK. And I live on the south side and hate driving to ORD when MDW is so much closer. With Metrojet gone, there's a bit of a gap in service to Washington D.C., why not start MDW-IAD??? Now that's a route I could use!

I read the schedule and don't remember when it was. UAL flew once a special flight from ORD-MDW on B737-200! Yes, UAL used to served to DEN from MDW. I don't recall remember if they flew to IAD from MDW.

I flew out of MDW on UA in 1990. We flew nonstop MDW-MCO. It was on a 737-300. They happened to match the fare that the old Midway Airlines was offering.

Until the early 60's United only served Midway and in fact it's headquarters were located adjacent to the airport. In the 60's, as the jets were introduced United shifted more and more of its flights to ORD and built what was called EXO, their headquarters in Elk Grove Village, just northwest of O'Hare.

Yes, about ten years ago or so I flew a 737-300 MCO-MDW as well.

Why did the service end? Did they just want Midway out? I believe someone said they offered the same fare as them?
