Brussels New "A" Terminal

Mon Dec 03, 2001 6:32 am

The new "A" terminal at Brussels International airport will open in the beginning of 2002.

The "A" terminal is 650 meters long, 38 meters wide and 18.5 meters high.
In total the "A" terminal will cover 71 560 square meters.

There will be 29 jet-bridges, which will give the access from the terminal to the planes.
The new "A" terminal will be accessable with a 250 meters long tunnel under the tarmac.

Terminal "A", will provide the airport of Brussels with 31 new contact gates for the airplanes.
This is the same as 37 new parking possitions.
This all, depends on how the parking possitions on the south side of the terminal will be occupied with airplanes with small or wide wing dimensions.
The north side will be reserved for the small planes, and at the south side there is places for 6 wide-bodies.

To give you an idea of this all, I added some pictures below.

It's about time for a new terminal for BRU. I connected through BRU (to LCY) this summer, the flights were great (Sabena!), but the terminal buildings at BRU seemed they were built in the 70's and as stuffy as if they never opened a single window since the terminals were opened.

The B terminal dates back from urly 1994 I believe. Since you travelled to LCY from Germany, you must have passed trough the C terminal to the B terminal. The C terminal looks terrible and was built for the world exhibition in Brussels in 1958.

Is this for Schengen departures? I should assume so as there seems to be ample room on B pier for non-schengen...

Will it be open Jan 21 when I make my arrival into BRU. It'd be nice to avoid the C pier (are they demolishing or at least renovating it?)

Sabena is shutting down and BRU is getting a new terminal??

Anyway, LOL goes to the 4th pic! A LH 707??? I thought the terminal would be new! And in the 7th pic I think I can see the nose of a BOAC aircraft! Don't they have newer digi-models to put?

Yes, was just going to say the same thing as Lewis...an LH B707 in old colors really looks out of place in the picture. I guess who ever did the drawing is not an airplane enthusiast.

Ausssie, the new terminal wont be open by januari the 21st. It will be open somewhere in may or april. BIAC is not allowed to demolish the oldest parts of the airport, as these are protected buildings. Biac will renovate the buildings after completion of the A terminal. The A terminal was supposed to be used for Shengen flights only, however things might have changed now.

Yea, I was transiting in Brussels last year enroute from London City to New York and the terminal that was under construction was pretty impressive! The Terminal B was not bad as well, clean and nice interiors, but I think terminal C is terrible! However, the Sabena staff at Brussels airport were very rude which make me had one of my worst flight experience ever! Beside Sabena, Brussels is pretty good for an airport!

Regards.

Aussie: Yes, this was the intension, but after the bankruptcy of SABENA, I don't know for the moment what there planning will be!

Lewis, Parisien: It's the terminal where my topic is about "LOL"
For the pictures, I have to reffer you to BIAC."LOL"
But you're right, a new terminal, and old birds arriving, everything is possible theser day's!

The pictures are great, but last time I checked, Lufthansa had long since retired the 707's and introduced a new paint scheme(refer to their 747 in pic#7). Also,BOAC is no longer around.
How old was the graphic designer, 70?  Smile

Been there a few weeks ago and work is really speeding up now. Most of the jetways are now installed. I really like them. Unlike the ones in picture 3, they are actually full-glass all the way (including the moving sections).

Best regards,

AirDD: No, it was supposed to be a chengen-terminal.
So that people who are travelling within chengen countries, not losing to much time by switching planes.
And SABENA had a lot of chengen connections, but that's history now!
So, there is not yet an exact solution, how they are going to build-out the new "A" terminal.

Aerokid: Could you explain me how you entered the pictures in my topic, please.
Tried to do this, but didn't found any link to copy the pictures to this topic.
By the way, thanks for doing this, so the other people doesn't have to go anymore to the webpages!

The terminal looks very nice Big grin

Sorry for saying that all BRU terminals look old. Of course, the B terminal is okay. I think I forgot about the B terminal, just because the C terminal was so terrible. It's often like that when you make passenger surveys: They will always tell you what they didn't like, but they will forget to mention the things they liked. Probably I made just the same mistake.

Lewis,

Sabena closed down a couple of weeks ago !! How long do you think building a terminal takes ??
Even the 11th September tragady was ofcourse NOT foreseen, how could they ??
There was a big need for a new modern terminal in Brussels because , like already explained , the C-terminal is out-dated completely.
The need is not gone as well, it is not possible to get extra business/airlines if you can not offer them good and modern service !

The A pier is brand new and the B terminal is still VERY modern ( < 10 years old ) There were initial plans after the new A terminal is finished to re-model/ re-build the C-terminal as well but since the latest facts ( 11th September/Sabena ) it is possible that it is delayed now.
I don't know, I'm sure the near future will tell

The world didn't stop you know , the European flights were operated by Sabana are being taken over by DAT.Virgin Express/British European, Lufthansa, British Midland, VLM ........
I'n sure , once business is picks up in the airlines business there will be some intercontinental destinations being strted up as well ( Africa by DAT, US by VG and others ... )

Maybe today there are less flights but in the future this number will go up again and since you can not build a terminal in5 months, you should look in the future to plan this ! SO they can maybe potpone the work on terminal C, but for terminal A it was already to late, better finish it and use it then just let it stand there as a unfinished monster and keep using the old C-terminal.

So I don't know how and that the plans are changed but the A-pier was and still is a very good thing for Brussels airport !

The major terminal with the 2 original 'fingers' was built as from 1956 and opened in 1958, for the 'Expo '58' World Exhibition.

During the 1970's they added a new satellite pier.

One of the 2 original finger-piers was demolished and replaced by the B-pier.

To be honest: I think they should try to refurbish the old terminal, because if you look to it, from the main apron, it really looks like a haunted house or something like that. During the 1950's, I can imagine it really must have been beautiful, but the lack of servicing etc, has turned this beautiful building into a rather dirty airport building...One has to be honest about that, right?

Cpt. Caveman, when you've loaded the picture onto your screen (from it's original website, in this case the BIAC website), right-click on it and select "Properties". There you will find the exact URL for the picture, paste and copy this adress into your message body. Then type "img src=" in front of it and all this in between "<" and ">". The line to display the first picture would look like this:

>img src=http://www.biac.be/works/images/l_pa1.jpg<

Note that I switched the > and < otherwise the picture would come up again instead of the text.

Best regards,
GR.
