What Is Better For Long Range 747, 777 Or A340?

Mon Dec 03, 2001 2:53 pm

I am interested in what passengers prefer flying on and why. I think that four engined jetliners are better for very long range flights b/c they dont have to comply with etops rules.

Business travelers prefer the 777 for it's speed so they can pick an earlyer connection to their final destination.
Cabin is more quiet too.

If you want to look at it from the passenger point of view, it doesn't matter really. It 's rather a question of which airline you would prefer. It's the airline that decides on important things like legroom, service, connecting flights etc.
I fly long-haul services quite often, using both 744 and A340 (until now, no 777, though this is sheer coincidence) and to me it's only the choice of airline!

It is said that in flights exceeding 10.000 KMs,a four-engine is better.
B747 or A340 are the workhorses of such flights !!!

Having flown neither the A340 nor the 777 there ´s only one possibility left for me to vote i.e.the 744 although I ´d love to take both the A340 and 777 and that´s what I´m really wanting do in the near future.

I think all of them are great a/c and as has been mentioned numereous times here it depends pretty much on the airline´s cabin layout & seat arrangement rather than the a/c itself.

I've never flown on board A340 yet, but A330 is a great plane.

Between B747 and B777, B747 wins hands down.......

My fave is the 747 400, a very close second is the 340 ( which I fly very frequently) and then the 777

Apparently there are different surveys, which show, that either one or the other aircraft is preferred by this and that user.

But I never knew, that there already surveys, which show, that the B777 is preferredover the A340-600 because of its speed. If the user called "Yqfca" please could post the URL to that survey, that would be superb.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Anyway, it depends on the airline, and of course the personal preference. The only known fact, which can be measured, is, that the A340 is quieter, than the B777.

744.

I usually fly SQ to/from SFO. F seats on 744 (SQ 1/2 via HKG) are nicer than those on A340 (SQ 15/16 via ICN).

I feel that there are few people who share the same thought to me as SQ.2 to SFO usually filled up first before SQ.16 from my experience. Often time, I would get a seat on SQ 16 easily, but will have stay on the waitlist for SQ.2 and quite often didn't get on it.

G'day

There's people flying them all, my guess is this is not for show but each A/C type must have advantages for a given task, else it is hard to justify owning and flying them all.

I have flown on all of these several times each on the Atlantic

The A330/340 have the best economy-class cabin I have ever been in. Just lovely.

777 and upper deck of 747 are also great

I would agree mostly with that survey, however the A340 and the 777 cruise at the same speed, and the 744 is faster than both of them.

I may be in the minority here but I find the 777, especially in Economy class, very cluttered and rather uncomfortable particularly in the 2-5-2 (or worse 3-4-3)configuration. I have been on MH, EK, CX and SQ, and only on SQ's 3-3-3 is it bearable. If possible, I would always choose a 747 or A340 over a 777 on longhauls.

By request: In a "World Magazine" that does not allow the use of its publications to be republished without written permission, a corporate airline CEO stated that the preference of long distance travel by business people goes toward the 777 (versus the A340) because of it's speed and quiet cabins.
As for speed and my personal preference I would prefer the 747, but if I had to fly ANY other type of aircraft to get a nonstop instead of a change of planes I would not hesitate to do so.

I must admit that I did not fly Airbus for several years out of protest, when the French authorities jailed the captain chief instructor of Air France for crashing the A320 at the Paris Air show. It was my opinion (still is) that he was threatened with jail to safe Airbus' face while he was trying to sell the A320 to the public. He was in my opinion misinformed about the performance capabilities of the A320.
But, please, ..... lets not start another Boeing versus Airbus debate.

IF speed really is an issue, then the A346 will be at least as good as the B777, due to the increased speed. Not to mention the B767, which is often operated with even slower speed, than the A343.

But can speed be that important? Is speed really an issue in Asia, where many B777 are flying on middle range high density routes? There are - in my humble opinion - far more factors, which decide, if a flight was ok good not.

As I said, there are also statements of other airline executives and surverys, who clearly say, that their passengers prefer Airbus. Airbus and Boeing customer can't say, that passengers would prefer aircraft, which the airlines don't operate. How could the UAL-manager say, that pax would prefer the A340? How could the LH-CEO say, that pax would prefer the B777?

But why do aircraft manufacturers even publish such statements? As if a "normal" passenger (not an A.net-user) would know the difference between a DC-3 and a B777, or a A330....

But then again, show me your survey and I show you the "sponsor". Or in other words: I don't believe everything, since I started lying myself...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

As for not flying Airbus out of protest, that's definitely your right to do so, but this is a personal decision, which shouldn't influence the objective discussion about the question "What Is Better For Long Range 747, 777 Or A340?"

BTW, one of my best rides was on a SR MD11, which I enjoyed more, than the long awaited flight on an UAL B772.

My best flight so far was on a SQ B747. But perhaps, this is due to the fact, that this flight was at most 1/3 full, which had as consequence, that almost everybody had a complete row  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The only flight missing is one either on an A330 or an A340  Sad

Of course, these are only my 0.02 $

Yqfca,

Who says that the B777 has a quieter cabin than the A340?

The A340 has the quietest cabin in its class. Sure it's Airbus propaganda, but Boeing hasn't challenged it. I've also flown both aircraft (actually about 30mins from each other) and the A340 is definately quieter.

The B777 certainly has a beautiful cabin inside, the A340 probably has the best ventilation of any long haul airliner out there (can't be said for the B777 and its crazy climate control  Smile. The B777 has wider seats than its A340 colleague, although the A340 has the same seat width (in Economy) as the B747 - the A320 has wider seats than its widebody cousin!

Cheers,

Justin

For longhauls, my choice goes to the 767 or the A330/A340. Seating configuration is definately the more important issue when you speak of comfort.
You will never have the great 2-3-2 configuration in a 777 or a 747.
