What Was The Best Vintage Aircraft? [-Nice Pics-]

Mon Dec 03, 2001 4:10 pm

What do you feel was the best (or simply your favorite) older commercial aircraft? And why was it the best, or your fave?

Let's begin with Boeing's 707 ......

Let's not forget the 707 lookalike: the B720 ......

More fine examples of vintage types ........
-----------------------------------------------
The ill-fated DeHavilland Comet ......

The Trident ......

[Side note on the Trident .... Guys, look at this interesting hunk of information I dug up concerning the expansion of the Trident program, and a proposed variant looking very very much like our current B757!]........

Convair's 880 and 990 ......

Vicker's most efficient VC-10 ......

The Lockheed L1049 Super Constellation ......

The Douglas DC-3 ......

The SUD Caravelle ......

Mustn't leave out the DC-8 ......
HOLY JET FUMES!!! ....

Let me close out with the mightiest of the mighty early jetliners: the Boeing 747-100 and Boeing 747-200!! Gotta love those!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ......

Well i would have to say the old 747-100 is my favorite classic airliner with their handsome liveries of bare metal underbodies and cheatlines that funky club posse upstairs, with an elegant spiral staircase leading you back down to a spacious first class and tourist class cabins where staff make your trip a beautiful experience!

Great place to just chill have a dub and a quiet drink with som pplz

Harminous colours and beautiful atmosphere add to the wonderful BI 747 experience

Fantastic service and gourmet meals

Some very lucky ppl boarding a BI 747

Nice set of pictures , but what would the greens say about that smokey old DC-8, at the time it all seemed part of the fun.
Just like to add one old prop liner to the list .it is
Bristol Britannia especially the 300 series ,which was a bit longer and so had more graceful lines.

LAX and Braniff Place, Great photos !!!

Braniff Place, when did you take the shot of BI 747SP at DFW? I worked at the Dobbs Coffee shop right across from gate 22 at DFW 2W from 1979-1981. I got in trouble all the time going over to look at that plane each time it was in. God I miss those days, everything was just a little easier. I always voluntered to run the garbage out just so I could get down closer to the aircraft. Still love Braniff !!!!

Mighluss,

The extra engine on BA's 747 is the spare engine that can be carried in the B747's wing. The B747 is designed in such way that it can carry an additional engine. It does however increase the drag and fuel consumption of the plane (due to the additional weight).

They're all beautiful. I share Lax's passion for older planes. The 707, VC-10, Comet, Caravelle, Constellation, DC-3.... and many, many more. I would like to add the DH91 Albatross and the Boeing 314 Clipper to the gaggle.

Lax ->

Holy Friggin cow, you go on my extended respected users list effective IMMEDIATELY!!!!

OMG I love those planes, that was when FLYING was FLYING

And look at that AA lounge photo!!! Can you imagine being the pilot of THAT? Those were the golden days of aviation, when flying wasn't just flying, it wasn't just transportation, it was an Experience, something to be remembered and savored. Something to share with family and freinds, cofort, class, and prestige, all in one, that was the way flying was, the way flying should be.

Today airline travel is little more than glorified busing, what an experience it must have been to ride on the wings of the old! To kiss the skies in something that represented the modern, the sleek, the fast, the luxurious, the enjoyable. Ah, those were the goodl old days, if only, for one brief moment, they could return.....I am sure all of us avid aviation lovers woudl die on the spot, and don our wings and fly with the angels of old, eternal bliss among silver wings.....

Aloha 737-200  Love

Some of those 747 upper deck interiors are Austin Powers quality!

Anyway, my favorite old bird is the Lockheed Constellation.

I have always been a big fan of the 707. Why? I am not sure. It certainly has a sleek appearance overall. Compared to its main competitor, the DC-8, I think it looks better, with more sweep to the wings and tail, more windows, and cleaner-lookin nacelles. Plus those two intakes on the Douglas nose just do not look good. I think another factor is that, as I was beginning to get into plane spotting in the late 70's, the 707 was disappearing more quickly than the DC-8, so I cherished those I got to see even more. I remember a TV ad that United ran to introduce the 767. It began "If you ever had a favorite airplane, this one's going to take its place." Then the lights turned on to reveal the 767. Well, I do like the 767 quite a bit, but it has never supplanted the 707 at the top of my list.

Justplanesmart:
Oh man you're bringing back memories, I remember that commercial. I was only like 9 years old or something.

I agree, the 707 is a beautiful sleek aircraft.
I remember flying on one, LAX-ORD on American back in 1978. My last 707 experience.  Sad
