"Wright And Shelby Amendments". Any Info?

Fri Dec 07, 2001 2:50 am

I found this on the SouthWest website;

"Travel into and out of Dallas Love Field is subject to the limitations of the Wright and Shelby Amendments. This Federal law prohibits Southwest from offering for sale or providing transportation between Dallas Love Field and any point beyond Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Alabama."

Does anyone know why this exists and what it's purpose is? It seams very weird.

It was created so that Love Field would not take away flights from DFW when it was first built. The Wright Ammendment does not allow carriers with 56 seats or more to fly outside the states bordering Texas (without a stopover).

Many people/organizations have wanted to dismantle it, saying it's out of date while others (like American) want to keep it saying it's doing its job.

It was not only just an attack on Love field stealing traffic, but I think it was a direct attack on Southwest itself.
