As we all know, a decision from Lufthansa about ordering the A380 or not, was long overdue. After the Sept 11 events and the confirmation of the worldwide economic recession, all plans about any purchase were thought suspended.
Therefore, it'd been a real surprise to hear yesterday (BBC/CNN) that the German carrier ordered a batch of 15 A380-800 (555 pax). The contract is worth around 3.6b $.
Deliveries are set to start in 2006/2007 (to be confirmed) and apparently, no decision has been made about any engines' selection. At least, the engine manufacturer has not been announced.
Airbus has now about 95 A380s on order; although this new order is good news for the European manufacturer, it still needs another 150/200 other ones at least to break even. By the time A380's deliveries start, the economic downturn will be hopefully over and some more recovering airlines might be keen on placing some orders for the Super Jumbo?
