Similar Airline Liveries

Sat Dec 08, 2001 2:22 pm

I tend to wonder whether these 2 liveries looking very similar was just a coincidence, or if one copied the other.

I highly doubt its just a coincidence.

What other airline liveries do you know of that are quite similar?

Regards.

I undersyand that Co owns a percentage of Copa Airlines.
that may explain why the liveries are similar

Damn BA I was gonna say that, but you did I guess. Yes, CO owns about 49% of COPA.

Planes with all white body liveries look pretty much the same from a distance. I can see it being deceiving for a beggining spotter anyway.

Here's two more logos from airlines of the past that I always thought looked similar.

The first one is Allegheny Airlines, before they became USAir.

The second one is Central Airlines, a feeder airline that was merged into Frontier in 1967.

Different colors, but the shape and design was pretty similar.

There's a better picture of the Central Airlines logo on this website:

http://members.tripod.com/~LAMKINS/CentralAirlines.html

I'd post the link to the .jpg file but it's on a tripod site and tripod fixed it where you can't link photos to external sites. But go to the above site and scroll down to the 4th image.

BTW, the first image on the above page shows how Central's final livery would have looked on some DC-9's they had ordered. Unfortunately, Frontier merged with Central before the planes were actually delivered and they never flew with that livery.

Although they had different liveries, Mohawk and Western had similar indian head logos at one time. Both had red cheatlines Mohawk's logo was on the tail.

... but Western's logo was at the front of the cheatline and smaller.

This 1964 time table shows Mohawk's indian logo better.

And this website with old Western Airlines memorabilia shows Western's Indian ogo.

Another reason for such similarities can be that one airline has aircraft on wetlease from another. Quite often all that is replaced in the livery is the name of the airline, all other things (sometimes even logos) are kept.

Delta's newest tail & Aeroflot's tail look similar. To me, it seems like they both have the airbrush effect, but that's the only similarity in their livery.

Who just copied FedEx. RepEx. and in the tradition of FedEx, they even named the aircraft after a person...................Norman Big grin

fanofjets - the reason why the similarity of the JAS A300 and Airbus house colours is because JAS asked that it's aircraft be delived in that scheme because they liked it. So it's really the same scheme.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned US Airways and United. Stephen Wolfe went to UA, changed from white livery to gray, then went to USAir, made it US Airways and did the UA liveryy witht the colors reversed.

The disgarded Air India livery of the 90's was an unwanted JAL option (note the rising sun) which Landor really screwed up.

Similar to JAS and Airbus, the present Royal Brunei scheme is a slight derivitive from Boeing's 80's livery (they designed it).
