How Many Of You Work At An Airport?

Sat Dec 08, 2001 10:32 pm

How many plane spotters actuly work at an airport? Do you ever get the urge to go airside and take photos? I do and there is a great spot at LGW where you can see regular employees having a 'lunch break' on an aircraft stand very close to the runway, perfect photo opportunity! Perhaps I should buy a camera.  Smile But watch out for the BAA !

I have for the past 3 years. I worked 2 as a ramper at MDW and now I work in noise abatement at ORD. However I don't get as many chances to spot and photograph planes as I used to.

I work at LHR on Concorde maintenance, I've never been a plane spotter as such, post Lockerbie (PA103), I stopped taking a camera into work due jumpy security.
Except for special occasions, like when B747-136 G-AWNA was retired, and had a temporary representation of it's original BOAC livery on one side.
Not bothered with the Concorde saga of the past 17 months, as we often can get pics and videos of the special events.
If an unusual aircraft comes in to a hangar, I'll have a look on board, last week an Air India 747-400 came in for an engine change, but I was too busy doing my job, as well as the inevitable tours over a Concorde for those Air India staff who asked.

I used to work as a ramp agent at STR. That was a really cool job, working between all those aircraft. Now that our ramp services have been given away to another company, I'm working at the check-in. That is rather boring, but still it's a good feeling that I can go out to the ramp before or after work, whenever I want, whenever I see a special aircraft on the airport information system.

I'm currently at LAS (Las Vegas). One of the benefits I enjoy the most is being out among the aircraft.

I would LOVE to work at an airport - but my hearing is so wonky I don't see that particular wish coming true. Seriously, if I thought I had a hope in hell of becoming a member of a cabin crew I'd take it ....

Even though employers make a big thing about equal opportunities - hearing is pretty essential for the job and even with my two hearing aids which make things on a semi normal level for me ... I doubt it'd be practical ... even though I lip read perfectly ...

I used to work G-AWNA all the time when it came to IAD. We used to call it G-AWNO because none of the drive bays ever worked.

Back to the topic I have just returned to work at the airport after a two month furlough.

Anyone think the possibility of getting into something like cabin crew is viable with impaired hearing ? Heck I hold down a job in IT support where telephone communication is one aspect of my job .... there must be SOMETHING in the aviation industry which means I'm not going to be sweeping airport floors ....

I work ramp and catering for Mesaba at MSP. I just had my camera at work the other day, doing a project for school (I wrote a small technical manual on how to perform ground functions on a Saab 340). I used to bring my camera to work on a regular basis, but it seemed that every day that I brought my camera, nothing worth photographing would come in or the lighting was really bad. The next day, sans the camera, something really exotic would come in and I had no way to photograph it. Oh well...

I work in SFO as a Customer Service Agent for SkyWest Airlines/United Express. I work in very close proximity to Concourse G (IT), so I constantly see LH, SU, UA, EVA Air, SQ, etc. just a couple hundred feet away. But I don't take pictures, I haven't used my camera lately... I just admire usually  Smile

Baec777,

A "loadsheeter" is someone who calculates weight & balance and prepares the loadsheet for the flightcrew. A loadsheet contains all details about payload (pax, luggage, cargo, etc...) as well as fuel, crew config, and general data such as slot time, destination, aircraft specs (empty weight, maximum pax, etc...).

BTW, I've worked at 3 of the 5 major Belgian airports: Liege, Ostend and Brussels. At Brussels, I was employed as junior loadcontroller, that's the same as a loadcontroller but I wasn't authorised to sign off the loadsheet.

And yes! I always had a camera in my locker.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Best regards,
GR.

I've been with United for just over 15 years. I have been a reservations agent (for 1 year), a customer service agent (for 3 years), a load planner/operations controller (for 7years) and I am now a lead air frieght agent and dangerous goods specialist. Time flys when you're having fun!

AirMalta Purser for 23 years. My only regret is that I do not have pics of our B720b's. I cultivated my interest in civil aircraft in the past few years. Was more of a military spotter. I do not carry a camera with me to work because of security and customs. I like to meet people with interest in aviation. So if lyou can visit our plane at LGW you're more than welcome. Make sure you are wearing and displaying your airport pass !!!
