CO - EWR To London Stanstead

CO opened the EWR-STN route with a 757 during early 2001 and it was reported that the route was a success; CO dropped the route as part of its cutbacks in response to the events of 9/11.

Does anyone know (hey, CO experts) if CO plans to restore this route in the future. It was the only scheduled transatlantic service to London's now-popular Stanstead airport and fits in with CO's strategy of serving "smaller" UK regional airports out of EWR.

Any news?

The latest CO timetable does not mention any STN service, and after 11 Sep, I remember reading the route was canceled permanetly. My guess is the route should be back in 2003, when analysts predict the industry will have stabilized. But a lot can happen in over a year.

The company has been very quiet about new and reinstating routes from pre 9-11.

I would seriously doubt that the route would be reopened. They put a 757 on the route because not many pax flew. Even with the 757, the flight was only about 60-75% full. I think that CO will stick with LGW.

i disagree. The 757 was used on the route, as it was a new route. It makes sense to use the smallest a/c possible on a new route to gauge the traffic. CO's BHX route has remained, and it has been officcialy reported that CO's STN route was performing better than when the BHX route opened. A 70% load factor for a new, previously non existant route, is excellent, and plans were in hand to use larger equipment into stansted. I would suspect that the route will be restarted in the coming summer season.

The CO service from BHX to EWR had an average load factor of 79% during November, it is actually carrying more passengers than this time last year.

Maybe another US carrier will operate out of STN? There is certainly a market for transatlantic services from the Essex airport and no doubt transatlantic services will return when the market has become more stable.

No news about service re-opening for the summer of 2002.........maybe for 2003.

If, as expected, there is openskies between the US and UK, dont look for this route to restart. All emphasis will than be on LHR. I have long felt that service to STN was to put pressure on BA to agree to openskies. Keep in mind that STN is open to all us airlines for new service.

Very good point 747firstclass, while many airlines are complaining about lack of access to the UK, sometimes we forget that certain airports in the UK, such as STN, do have free access. For example, if an airline really wanted to start service say between Chicago and London, flights to STN could start immediately.

The Bermuda2 thing is all about LHR. While I do hope that the US/UK reach an open-skies agreement, or atleast make progress in updating that out of date treaty, there is more to the story.

Royal operated an A310 on YYZ-STN for awhile about 2 years ago. Don't know what happened to that

El Al used to fly JFK-STN (I flew that route in summer of '98) with a 752. Don't know how long that lasted. I belive AA used to have ORD-STN.

The Newark-Stansted route actually did pretty well and the 757 was a logical choice for an airline testing a new market. The benefits of Stansted for business travellers is its relative proximity to the City of London (financial district), the East End, and the Docklands/Canary Wharf complex where many international firms have their London and European headquarters. My guess is that Continental will NOT reinstate the route unless business travel picks up and perhaps we will see that in the Spring of 2002. The Stansted route was primarily a business route and as such, demand is probably soft anyway now so Continental's priorities are elsewhere. However, it is well known that Continental's UK routes do rather well, including the Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow services out of Newark.
