How Much Does It Take For Take Off At Your Airport

Sun Dec 09, 2001 7:08 am

How many minuites does a plane usually take at your home airport from the time it departs until it holds position for take off on the runway? In Dubai it takes like 10 to 20 minuites, in Sharjah, it dont take more than 10 minuites. how about your airports guys?

I remember flying from London Heathrow to Dubai on British Airways. the plane kept taxiying for a long distace and didnt even stop! and i think that we were taxiying with only one engine because they wanted to safe fuel so they didnt start the other one except when we are ready to take position at the runway. but that taxi took 20 minuites, and then we held position in the aircraft long line where they were waiting for take off and we kept moving and stopping for 15 minuites so i guess it was almost 35 to 40 minuites after we left the gate!

I am from Sharjah, but i live closer to Dubai international, and it really depends on what runway are they using. but usually as fly_emirates said, it wouldnt take more than 20 minuites as a maximum.

Coming back from Chicago O Hare on a 777 we were sitting there for an HOUR before the plane began taxing down the runway - something to do with five planes being ahead of us - worse than London rush hour traffic !

All my flights out of Heathrow have been smooth and on time oddly enough - like no more than 20 - 25 minutes between everyone boarding and takeoff ...

At LHR, last time i was there we were lucky with only 5 - 10 minutes before t/o!

At BRS we once had to wait longer than 5 minutes, otherwise it takes usually 3-4 minutes.

I can tell you from argentina:

from catamarca city (CTC): the taxi to the runway takes no more than 3 minutes!

from La Rioja city (IRJ): It takes some 5 minutes, as the aircraft has to backtrack at the runway

from aeroparque (AEP): Depending on the hour, the average is some 7 minutes

In Auckland, New Zealand it usually takes around 8-10mins, though if there is a light load of Pax and cargo, the plane will use a earlier taxi way to line up on the runway and depart!

Once, many years ago, I flew a USAir BAe146 out of LAX. Because Terminal 1 is so close to 24L, the tug pushed us straight to the runway and we just powered up and took off! From blocks off to liftoff, it must have been no more than 5 minutes.

I'll just mention the carrier airport nearest me which is TUS. It is very rare to see 4 aircraft lined up ready for takeoff. The biggest delays come from the F-16s of the AZANG. I think the longest wait I've ever seen is 10 minutes, the shortest would be WN. They slow down after taxi enough to do the 180 and leave. AA tends to sit for no discernable reason. Must have something to do with gate availabilty at ORD and DFW.

Here in PHX I have waited anywhere from 3 minutes after push back to 10 minutes. I would say standard time is 6 minutes.

I can do it in as little as 1 minute  Smile. but that doesnt include the run-up. But thats for a cessna.

At ONT, the gates my airline uses are right next to the runway, so all the FA's are going through the pax briefing 1 minute to push. they then have the cabin prepared by the time they reach the runway.

I also fly out of TUS and PHX often enough. At Tucson it is strictly a turn and burn affair. After push back, especially if you are taking off on 11L, it takes just a minute or two to taxi to the runway... then power up and go. Once my flight was significantly delayed, so I got on the much delayed earlier flight... after door closure we sat for 20 mins, taxied slowly and held for another 10. Such delays, as this one was, was for a groundhold at PHX.

At Sky Harbor depending on which runway is used and which gate area you are leaving from makes a big difference. If you are leaving from the HP gates in Terminal 4 and departing 7L it will take a while to get there.

The longest taxi I can remember would be at ORD... leaving the C concourse, taxying all the way around the terminal complex and out to 14L.

Plus I have spent a few times in a long taxi queue for runway 15L at IAH... once the finish the widening and lengthening project on the parallel runway that should speed up departures there.

In Denver, it greatly depends on the runway.

But on average, its about a 10 to 15 minute taxi before take-off. The runways in Denver are very far from the gates, the 2 farthest runways are more than 2 miles away from the terminal.

Regards.

even though here in accra ghana ops are not all that constant, aircraft still take like 5 to 10 mins to take off like being told to standby after being cleared to taxi, even though the trip to the holding point is like 3 mins away, due to paperwork(ie processing the atc clearance, etc.)

Here in ATL, it's never the same. It seems to me, that a lot of times, the plane will be pushed back a tiny bit, then sit there for a while. Usually 10-15 minutes if that happens. A lot of times there is a bit of a line to takeoff and you usually sit in that for about 15 minutes. On a normal day, I'd say it's about a 10 minute taxi to the runway, plus however long you must wait for takeoff behind other planes. Probably a 20 minute ordeal from pushback on a normal day.

At KCLE, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

At the lightest times, depending on your location in the airport, 5-10 minutes taxi and hold time. If you're at Concourse A and the active is 24L, you might be able to slip out in 3 minutes. If you're at Concourse B and the active is 6R, you might be out in about 8 minutes.

At the heaviest times I've seen about a 20 minute wait on average -- notwithstanding ground holds from other airports and bad weather along certain quadrants.

When I have departed from my local airport (KEF - Keflavik International Airport, Iceland) the aircrafts have usually started rolling 3-4 minutes after leaving the terminal.

Average time it takes from departure from gate to clearance for takeoff at O'Hare International Airport: 6 days, 4 hours and 13 minutes.

That's on a good day. If you fly at rush hour it could easily take weeks.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

At Pensacola, average time is usually about 5 minutes or so....just got to taxi out to the end of 17/35. Sometimes it takes a little longer as this is the deep South and for Southerners, there's no real hurry......

At Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos LGAV it takes about 3-4 minutes. There is not much traffic at the same time like LHR. Of course, I travelled during the winter. Summer is another story...
