Vancouver To Calgary On Airbus 340-300?

Sun Dec 09, 2001 7:22 am

I was looking on the Air Canada website and noticed that for the next 3 Mondays, AC 224 from YVR to YYC is being operated by a 343! Does anyone know why? It only operates on Mondays (Dec. 10, 17, 24). The rest of the days, AC 224 is served by an A320.

AC 224, Dec. 10 YVR-YYC - 343
Departs: 1330
Arrives: 1551

AC 231, Dec. 10 YYC-YVR - 343
Departs: 1700
Arrives: 1728

So it looks the 343 actually does a turn and flies back to Vancouver (rather than continuing on to somewhere like YYZ or Europe). Does anyone know why this is? I looked on the downloadable timetable and it says nothing about a 343 on this route. This is the biggest jet I've seen used on this route.

I know all about that flight! I was suppose to fly it for the very reason it was an A340. Well, I checked in on Oct.7, 2001 and found out it had been downsized to a 737-200. But it might be a repo flight for say Frankfurt or London.

Hello,

Repo means repositioning. Hence, moving the aircraft from one airport to another airport. For example, it might have been flying from A to B for 3 weeks. Now they want to fly the aircraft from C to D for 3 weeks. The flight between B and C is a repo flight.

The reason that it is an A-340 is that Calgary to Frankfurt is a 340, however it is the only 340 out of Calgary and because there is no maintenance base and repostioning of aircraft they fly a 340 out to Calgary to fly the Frankfurt route for a week and the one flying Frankfurt the previous week returns to Vancouver for maintenance and/or flights to other destinations.

Ya Air Canada sure does some funny aircraft scheduling. For instance Vancouver will be continued to be served with a 763 on the London flight (opposed to upgraded Calgary 343) except for only Thursday December 13. Why would this happen for only 1 day in an entire month? The best route though for different aircraft is got to be YVR-YYZ where you can see almost every aircraft type operating it, except for the Dash-8's, and you'll never know exactly which type until arrival at the airport.

Thanks for the information. It would be so nice to fly to Calgary on an A340 from Vancouver.... I imagine that the flight would be a pretty empty.

And yes AC operates a 744 (ex-CP) daily from Toronto to Vancouver (AC 3105). They also use a 747 combi on AC 11 (HKG-YVR-YYZ) every M/W/F.

Toronto-Montreal is another one of those routes, everything from the Dash-8 to the A340 operate that route on a regular basis, they even used to run the 744 on that route untill they got the 330 to continue the YUL-CDG flights...

Just for the record, most of the YVR-YYZ service I have observed since the integration has been B767, with the occasional A320, A330, and the B747 as mentioned. In fact, YVR-YUL and YVR-YOW use B767 at least once daily too.
