BOAC 707 at Tokyo-Haneda taxiing past the wreckage of a Canadian Pacific DC8 on 5th March 1966 (which crashed there the previous evening) about half an hour before it crashed itself. The 707 was photographed a couple of times in its rapid descent.

The concord one was very bad and horrifying to look at, but I think the PSA one deserves to mentioned too.

For me Elal in amsterdam, 4 october 1992, was my worst nightmare.
I live in Holland, and due to the media it had a great impact on me.

The first one now reminds me of the 'tourist guy' fake pictures, it just looks so fake (i know it is real).

Imagine seeing that in the distance while you are just chatting with a friend, and i'll bet they couldn't hear it gliding like that either (although i might be wrong, if its a fixed 35mm lens then it is quite close).

according to airdisaster.com, that BOAC 707 which crashed in Japan in 1966 had a flight number of 911  Sad and the accident was caused by 'encountering severe turbulence while the pilot gave the passengers a close view of Mt. Fuji.'
I wonder could this accident be prevented if the pilot didn't do what he did.

PSA 182 (B727) with it's starboard wing on fire in a rapid dive to the right, JAL 123(B747) that crashed into mount Otusaka was photographed by a villager as it flew past minus it's vertical stabilizer, BOAC 707 that crashed into Mt. Fuji was photographed minus it's tail, engines, horizontal stabilizer and wingtips in a flat spin streaming vapour, Air France concorde, AA 191 DC-10 at Chicago and there was also a photo of an aeromexico DC-9 minus it's tail section after it collided with a Piper over LA.

One of the most unforgettable crash photos (in my mind) is the shot of the nose of Clipper Maid of the Seas, lying on its side outside Lockerbie, Scotland, the morning after the fateful night PA 103 was lost. I remember reading a newspaper article and seeing Margaret Thatcher and her entourage standing near the nose a day or two after the accident. Hard to believe that 13 years have gone by since the incident, seems almost like yesterday.

It was especially memorable since on that particular day we were decorating our tree, and we normally don't do it so late. However, due to conflicts in the schedules of my wife's and mine, we had to wait until the 21st to decorate the Christmas tree as a family. I remember turning the TV on as we brought the tree into the house and feeling shocked as I had personally taken that flight twice before when visiting my sister-in-law while she studied in Germany. She had actually taken that flight many times before on the same aircraft, and she actually was on the flight on December 19th, though not on the same aircraft.

Most famouse, excluding the September 11 tragedies, is almost certainly PA 103 at Lockerbie. Second has to be the Concorde. AA 191 and PS 182 are not easily identifiable to the neophyte.

Dictionary? Neophyte means an untrained newbie. The new guy. The one who may be curious but doesn't know yet what the truth is.

I guess the one that shocks me the most and sticks out in my mind is the AA191 photo, because you can see how massive the aircraft is, and how devastating the damage was even though the aircraft was airborne.

Also another thing that sticks in my mind is the footage of the UA (273?) Crash in Sioux City. Most people only hear the crash and see the cartwheeling wreckage. However, if you look in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, you can see the top of the DC-10's tail flash by behind the storage building. That gives me the chills, because I can see just how fast the plane came in and it amazes me that anyone survived at all.

Ah yes, the nose cone of PA103 at Tundergarth Church.  Sad I went past that a couplke of days later after the crash and was nearly sick. Another image that I hated seeing was where the fuselage of PA103 crashed and where it created a huge hole in the ground.  Sad

You guys are morbid, but I think the most famous video footage of a crash besides Sept 11 would be Sioux City United DC-10

I think it has to be PA103, that is the first one i can remember.

I didn't know about Sioux City until i watched a 'black box' episode where it was featured, and only the AA DC10 minus an engine when i found aviation-safety.net in 1997.

Concorde only happened recently, so it is fresh in everyones memory, i'd say that in 10 years time maybe that will be the most infamous.

Why the morbid fascination with airline accidents? Should we start a topic "Which livery looks best in an accident"?

PSA 182 and AA DC-10 1979 @ORD are by far the most famous in my mind. Because you see the aicraft just moment before it hit the ground, if not seconds, and in your mind you can't even fathom the fear that must have been going through the pax's minds. They're haunting..

Here's some more crash photos:

AA flight 1420, crashed in Little Rock

Fine Air flight 101, crashed in Miami

TWA FLIGHT 800, crashed off Long Island

PA flight 103, Lockerbie

Aloha Airlines 243 "Pop Top", Kahului, Hawaii

Air Canada 143 "Glider jet", Manitoba

Air Florida, the imfamous "Palm 90" crash in Washinton, DC

Egyptair Flight 990, "suicide mission"

Air New Zealand flight 901, crashed in Antarctica

Two Pan Am and KLM 747s collided while taxiing, Tenerife, Spain

Columbia Airlines 747, collided with small twin engine aircraft on approach to Salt Lake, Utah

Columbia Airlines 747, Crashed in the ocean due to hijacking.

Aloha, the Pan Am 747 and KLM 747 didnt just collide during taxi... The KLM 747 was charging down the runway while pan am was lost in the thick fog. Pan am was just crossing the runway as KLM 747 was well into its take off run. KLM got visual with the PA, tried to rotate early to avoid, but slammed into the PA 747 at a very high speed, thus resulting in that amazing picture you posted! good job finding that pic to! i havent seen that one before.

Cheers!

Tenerife/PA103/UA232/Concorde are the most horrible pics I can remember...

Also the most horrible recording has to be when the KLM captain says "we gaan" and the F/O says something like "we're taking off err. we are on take off" Also the F/O or F/E asks the captain something like "are you sure we have the clearance?" Absolutely horrific to listen to when you know the consequences of capt. Van Zanten's takeoff.
