The 319, 320, and 321 are all from the same family. The are all essentially the same plane, just hte 319 is the shortest, 320 is in the middle, and the 321 is the stretched version. At least thats how I have heard it.

I'm guessing its like the boeing equiv of 737-600-700-800-900 (600 being the A318)

The A318 competes directly with the 717 and the 736.
The A319 with the 73G.
The A320 with the 738.
The A321 with the 752.

The 717 isnt really in the same market as the 736 and 318.Both are designed for long and thin routes whereas the 717 is for short routes.l

Actually the 318 is designed for short routes, the same sort of routes that the 717 is aimed at.

I think that the 321 competes more against 739 than 752.

Also, the A321 I think has simpler wing fairings or something like that to save weight in order to have similar performance to the A320.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

The reason you are not seing the difference is because the too pic aren't at the same scale. look at the 321, it's a lot thinner on the pic than the 321. that's why the 321 appear same size (even smaller) then the 320.

They do not all have the same routes and ranges. The A319 actually has the longest range, then the A320 then the original A321, all because they have the same fuel tanks. The A321-200 has an extended range due to enlarged tanks and thus is comparable with A320 in that regard. The 3 models compete with 737-700, 800 and 900 respectively although the A320 is actually a closer match to the out-of production 737-400. The A318 competes with 737-600 and not 717 which is lighter and designed for short hops.

The A321 is deffinetely bigger than the 739 (in terms of passenger capacity and MTOW), but it is inferior to the 752(ER) in terms of range.

The A321 does not compete with the B757.

Of course it does, they have a similar size! An A321 doesn't compete with a 757 on a EWR-STN route but definately on a CDG-LHR flight.

How many times are we going to argue about which a/c the 321 competes with?

When it was designed, there were no NG737's and it was designed to compete with the 757-200.

I have got all the Airbus Industrie marketing books for the 320 and 321 (which are sent to airlines) and throughout, the 321 is compared in every way to the 757.

so its either the opinions of the people in here, or the manufacturers who are right about which it was desinged to compete against! ....I know who I choose!!

The A321 is to the A320 what the 757 is to the 737-400 (roughly speaking)

A318=737-600
A319=737-700
A320=737-800
A321=737-900
I agree that there are some differences. The A321 is the same size as the 757-200, slightly larger then the 737-900. However, the 757-200 is a much, much more powerful aircraft that can do a wide variety of flights (Trans Atlantic, short runway, etc.) that the A321 is incapable of. Also, the A318 is roughly the same weight and size as the 737-600 and not the 717.
