Placement Of Exit Sign On DL 737-800

Wed Jul 28, 1999 4:30 am

Why is the overwing 'EXIT' sign on this DL 737-800 off to one side of the cabin, v.s. being centered?

Is it this way on other 737's? Other aircraft? Are the other exit signs this way?

North American's is also off-centered. Maybe Boeing alternates sides for exit signs(some on the left some on the right)? Kind of unlikely - you pretty much see the whole cabin in the picture.

Actually, Boeing put them all off centered - I think. Look at this picture of North American's interior.

Take a look at this picture of a Southwest interior - this is a 737-700.

Now look at the picture of the North American 737-800

Do you see those bumps or whatever they are coming down from the ceiling? Those aren't on the Southwest 737-700. It doesn' make sense for Boeing not to have signs on the other side(on the 800)!

The "bumps or whatever" are centerline TV monitors, viewed from the front, of the type found on many 757s. If you look close at the North American photo you can see there's a screen directly next to the exit sign which is why it's off centre. But the Delta plane has the newer drop down screens on the underside of the overheads, so this shouldn't affect the placing of the exit placards. Maybe offset signs are standard on all 737s with IFE systems regardless of whether the screens are on the roof or under the overheads.

Yea...that's what I'm thinking now, too...maybe it's easier for Boeing to have them placed in only one certain place, so they don't have to move wires, etc when an airline opts for the TV monitors?!

That could be dangerous! Some passengers may think that the emergency exit is only on one side! Ouch. Very interesting topic though. On the AWA 737-300 I was just on, the exit placards were centered.
