If I Want To Change Seats On The Airplane...

Mon Dec 10, 2001 12:11 pm

Let's say I'm flying to Las Vegas (which I will be) and I want to get a better view, perhaps something by the wing, could I change seats, or will a flight attendant tell me to sit where my tickets say I have to sit? Or maybe when I'm going to sit near the wing, will a mob appear and think that I'm a highjacker??? I need to know... thanks

Well what kind of plane are you flying on ? Pull up a seat plan, think about where you would like to sit and then get to check in EARLY or call a few days before to try and get the best seat for you.

Rather that than having the hassle of hoping an empty seat comes up on the flight. I like sitting just before the wing in a window seat ...

My uncle already got the tickets but didn't care to ask what airline it was on , or what airplane. Can I move if there's an empty seat?

Sure, they'll let you move inflight. Just let the Flight Attendant know when you move. If you get the airline info, just bring up the seat chart. If you want to change seats at the gate, I am sure they will be more than happy to give you another seat. I did this once to get a better view.

Passengers can move to where they wants as long if they want to nap, they move to a 3 or 4 seating. sometimes i move without permission, and they know I wants to nap or get better view down to earth. Be sure that no seats are being taken, sometimes plane leaves with less passengers. I was on AA105 on Oct 27 from JFK to DFW, on a MD Super 80... the plane was half filled with pax, and I moved to a 3 seater, and slept 2 hours way down to DFW after the 1st 2 hours reading a book.

they may not think you a hijacker....don't worry & just ask nicely  Smile

I was on a BA 757 EDN-LHR and the flight was maybe 3/4 full or so, and my dad asked the FA if he could move after take off so we could get some more space. She didn't have a problem with it at all. He never did though, the flight was too short, and we had a good convo going.

You don't even have toask, f/a don't even notice half the time, lol. Try and get the airline/aircraft information tho, So you can know what plane it is, and how full it is, you can even get information on what seats are empty. Let me know if it's on Delta.. I'll help ya out.

Vafi88

here's what you do:
oncethey close the doors, find the empty seat you want and sit in it before someone else takes it! I always do it and always works. The F/A's dont care or notice whenever I do it..I see people do it quite often as well. Lucky if you sit next to some gorgeous chick!

cheers

Well,

I work on Emirates airlines, and as a flight attendant i wouldnt have any problem with some one changing their seats. if some one came to me before we close the door and still in the boarding process i will ask him to wait until the aircraft door closes, then i will see if seats are available for him to change. It happend a lot of time, and that is no problem when the flight is not full. but if the flight is full and there is no other seat in the area he wants to move to available, then i will apologize and say that you have to stay in your assigned seat.

Make sure you know when and who and what you're flying. This can be crucial in determining your ability to change seat assignments, even in advance, and especially to LAS.

There shouldn't be a problem with moving,I did so recently.I was doing Sydne-Auckland and requested a window seat,we got 40J+K.It was only when we boarded our flight (747-300) that I found that row 40 is right where the wings are attatched so for structural reasons there is no window.Once the aircraft had levelled out a bit we moved back to row 60 where seats H,J and L were vacant. We spent the rest of the flight with a nice view.

On the return flight (a 767-300) we had more problems. We were assigned seats in the middle row,and although there were two seats together by a window which were vacant just to our right, the cabin crew announced that all pax had to stay in their assigned seats. This flight was operated by Air Canada if that makes a difference.

Speaking as crew it is no problem to swap seats. However do not just move as posted above when the doors are closed. The weight and balance (Trim) of the aicraft partley worked out on the seating plan. Not saying one person would affect this but if one moves you normally find the rest then follow. And then the trim will not be what the pilots think it is.By all means move after take off but make sure you go back for the landing.
Cheers.

Qantas744:

Air Canada seems to do that on all flights, I have heard that exact announcement on many AC flights. Other airlines seem to be ok with changing seats.

I fly weekly on ATR's and since sept 11th most flights are only half full .Once the doors have been closed it is now a regular occurance for the stewardess to announce that everyone is now on board and if anyone would like to move seats that there is no problem , so I'm sure that if your flight is not full and you ask can you move seats , they wont object.

More than once I've moved to an empty centre row on an AC 767 to sleep and I have never had any problems.
