Why Is United So Much Cheaper Than American?

Mon Dec 10, 2001 3:40 pm

Everytime I surf the internet in search of cheap fares to international destinations, United almost ALWAYS comes up cheaper than American. Most noticeably is the Asian destinations with fares sometimes even 1000US less than AA. Why is that? How does United pull a profit with such low fares in comparison to the industry? All of my miles are on AA because I live in DFW and I like AA as an airlines, but United's prices are oh so sexy.

It's probably because you fly out of DFW most of the time. It's an AA hub and hub flights are usually higher than spoke-hub-spoke flights (like if you were to go through SFO on United).

To explain the substantial difference in fares between AA and UA (presumably from the same origin to the same destination) as "competition" is overly simplistic IMO. It seems, from what I have found, that AA is typically not as hasty as UA to offer low fares on international routes. However, as the date of travel draws closer, AA will often have fares that either match or compare well with competing airlines. At least that is what I have found on routes to Europe when checking Orbitz, Expedia and the respective airlines' own web sites. If one will be flying economy class, AA, with MLTC in all of its longhaul fleet, is worth a somewhat higher fare IMO.

I also think maybe because UA has a better presence in Asia. CP was a big passenger carrier for AA to Asia.

Try the prices from Denver, or Chicago, the closest UA hubs to DFW and you may see an even bigger savings. AA does not have very many flights into Asia so you are probably seeing combo fares on AA and other carriers. That sometimes ups the price a bit.

To offer a fair comparison, you have to compare exactly the same route and then apply the same fare type along with the respective restrictions. Then you'd get a fair comparison.

When comparing United and American, are you comparing the same route, fare type, restrictions or are you just picking a couple of fares?

Fares quoted on the internet are not always accurate. Are they the lowest fares available for sale (meaning these are the lowest fares but may be sold out), or are they the lowest AVAILABLE fares at this time (meaning there are lower fares but these are the next available)?...these are not the same thing.

Internet sites also don't reflect all the restrictions associated with a particular fare.

Not all the time. It depends on what aircraft size the airline uses, what time of year you look up the prices, how long before travel and how full the a/c is.
