Virgin, Not Taking The A346?

Tue Dec 11, 2001 2:39 pm

Do any of you know if this is confirmed yet ?. I did hear this from a person with contacts at Boeing. I'm talking about the confirmed A346's, the ones already built or under construction, not the options.

I heard VS will get 772's then later the ordered 773ER's.

i doubt that will happen sorry, virgin is committed to airbus , and with there existing a340 series aircraft, its not viable to change. They will also lose a substansial amount of cash on their deposits.

false info imo

I don't understand why they would go for the 777 series.

This isn't a "make-up" post for that MidEx 717 one is it?

They also siad thay would take the A340-600

BTW , they will start a publicity campaign soon where they will put the attention on the fact that they only operate 4 engine aircraft !
How many engines does the 773ER have ? How many engines do the A340 have ?

Yes, VS did say that they will be getting the 777, and maybe VS isn't all that satisfied with the Airbus product.

Just my opinion....

Mr Branson has orders for:

A340-600
A380

777
Boeing High Speed thingy

With such a small fleet, he only needs one, max two of these... my bets are on the A340 and A380
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

No, this is not to make up for the Midwest Express post. Both are what I've heard.

The Boeing high speed thingy !!!. I like that one.

So Virgin have confirmed they will never fly twin engine aircraft ??. Can anyone confirm that ?

As far as I know, Virgin have ordered neither the 777 nor the Sonic Cruiser (yet). I can't really imagine them to be in a situation where they would order new planes. There have been rumours for quite a while that they'd go for the 777-300ER, but nothiing has been confirmed (to my knowledge). At some stage, there have been rumours that Boeing would take the A346s and deliver 777s later - which would give VS a bit of breathing space to allow the economy to recover. But that's all it is: rumours, with (IMO) little substance....

It is definitely known that they are negotiating to delay the A346 deliveries, though.

Hiya,
I read yesterday in some sort of aviation magazine in WHSmith entitled "Flight International" I think that Virgin has DELAYED not cancelled the orders for the A340-600 which won't make it Airbus's launch customer. Nowhere in the whole arttical did it mention the cancellation of the order.

Virgin are extreamly commited to Airbus following the sucsess of the A340-300 range. Orders for the A380 still remain intact. I have heard Virgin has been very interested in the Boeing Sonic Cruser (thingy) and there has been rumours of B777s in the fleet too.

Kind Regards.

I thought Richard Branson was recently quoted as saying his airline was safer than its main rival because it onlly operated 4 engined aircraft on transatlantic routes?

Doesn't that sound like he's sticking with Airbus? But well, I guess these people can say whatever suits them at that moment! But I certainly hope VS remains an A340 operator.

Any cursory glance at most of the aviation news magazines and you'll know that many airliners are 'deferring' delivery of their ordered and completed jets. Not cancelling (most of the time) or rethinking. Just putting off.

It's simply a matter of not needing the capacity.

During the recession of the early 90s, factory fresh 747-400s were flown directly to Mojave (the airliner graveyard) to be stored until they were needed, which they eventually were. I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing, even with A346's
