Airport Security Fees In Canada

Wed Dec 12, 2001 12:32 am

Along with Martin's new budget yesterday came the announcement of an extra $24 tacked on to a round-trip ticket for airport security fees.

Well, for one I think $24 is extremely high jump all at once.

Am I correct in assuming that it is $12 for the ticket for X to Z via Y, or is it $12 for X to Y and another $12 for Y to Z?

I say $24 is extremely steep, especially in our economy

Its 24$ Roundtrip, anywhere in Canada, regardless of the number of stops.
If you are flying one-way, 12$

The US has implemented, or already had, a 3.95$ roundtrip fee, are regardless of the strength of the lonnie, that still dosent account for 24$.

Consider this,
If I fly through YEG, (which I often do) there is a 10$ AIF (Like many other aiports), then AC's stupid Fuel Surcharge, (whatever it is now) so you can basically tack on a extra 50$.

Even Westjet will be affected, its one way 60$ fares went up 12$ to 72$.

This is not something to do with the airlines, or the airports, its national security, so there is no bloody way we should be paying for national (air) secuirty on airline tickets, it should be the governments responsibility.

Ridiculous.

Not to mention the $40 or whatever we already pay for NAV Canada.

I think this will transfer away from the airports and airlines some expenses that they are now absorbing.

It's likely to dampen demand to some degree though.

This is horible. Especially for Westjet. Clive Beddoe was saying that all of their routes will have to be reexamined so that they continue to be economical. This will cause a rise in fares which loses some customers to their cars. It's a worthy cause but a unreasonable price, especially in our current times.

Even if this fee does directly put the expense on the travellers, as opposed to the airline, who then charges you more, do you think the airlines will reduce the prices? Probably not.
