Thomas Cook Belgium, New Charter-Company!

Wed Dec 12, 2001 10:53 pm

Hello,

DNG, Wednesday, 12th of December 2001
(Belgian newspaper)

BRUSSELS

Touroperator Thomas Cook Belgium, announced today to start a new charter-company.
The new airline, will have 5 Airbusses A320.
Wenn everything goes by plan, Thomas Cook Belgium, will start next Easter 2002, flying it's own planes.
The main destinations will be the Mediterranean area, the islands Balearen (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza), the Canary Islands and North Africa! This is directly the start of the new Summer-season as well.

Thomas Cook, would have taken over the charter-company CityBird, but this deal turned out negative and CityBird went bankrupt.

Does anybody know where those 5 A320 come from? I think Condor Berlin wants to get rid of some. That would make sense, as Condor is part of Thomas Cook.

The A320's will come directly from JMC Airlines.

I was very sad with City Bird's disappearance... I wish them long life and the best of luck !! I hope many people from former CTB will be hired soon.

JMC will be using British flight deck crews but with Belgian cabin crew.

Condor Berlin getting rid of 320s wouldn´t make much sense: if Condor Berlin were to cut capacity, they´d have to (technically) lay off staff which then would have to be hired by Condor - the problem is that Condor pays about 10% higher wages than Condor Berlin.

Still everything wrong poor Ceilidh. On the press meeting this morning in Zelzaat, Belgium, CEO of Thomas Cook Europe/Noth Africa precised that 60 Belgian pilots will be hired.

Poor frustrated guy Ceilidh. I have pity for your case.

Dear Ceilidh,

I can confirm here that JMC will use Belgian cockpit crew as well. During the kick-off period they will use a mix of them: line-training captains and instructors will be Brittish and the other Belgian!!

At last some good news again...

Like Benjamin, I am also wondering which livery they are going to fly. I think too they will fly the JMC green/blue MICA livery

I've seen a TC livery today on TV. A white A320 with blue engines (similar to Sabena blue) and THOMAS COOK in blue capital letters on the fuselage. At the front of the fuselage, in smaller and thinner blue letters "EXPLORER".

Ceilidh, give it up!

Indeed, the livery will be a white fuselage with blue engines and tail. Blue Big letters Thomas Cook.
similar to the ex-sabena livery and the current finnair one.

Every Aircraft will also carry a name.

What names will they carry? Is EXPLORER possibly one of the names?

I think the new livery is quite good, but I preferred Citybird...(sorry to disturb your enthousiasm, but I won't forget what they did to CTB).
I heard also that ex-CTB staff would work for them; any thoughts about the number?

P.S.: What's wrong with Ceilidh? Does he 'hate' Belgians???

Life will be rather interesting at JMC (aka 'Just Might Collapse') shortly - their pilots have rejected the company's 7.5% paycut. If they are going to take UK aircraft - without their crews - and move them over to Belgium, I think we could see some 'social action' over here!  Insane Big grin

According to JMC crews over on PPRuNe, they have been told by their company that they can fly the A320s in Belgium; and furthermore JMC are offering to provide conversions for 757 rated people.

The five A320s will be transferred from the JMC fleet. Two additional Condor 757 s will be operated to cover seasonal demand during the summer. My understanding is that the main reason for setting up a Belgian airline with JMC aircraft rather than letting JMC do the job straightaway is for legal reasons. It seems as if a British airline can operate from Belgium within the EU without problems, but not to all non-EU destinations like Egypt etc.
How will Thomas Cook cover its long-haul needs ? CTB used to operate one MD11 and in the end one 767-300 almost completely for Neckermann Belgium.

Maybe they will work with Sobelair ( they have 767-300 ) for the long-haul routes.
If Sobelair still exits by that time or is not taken over by TUI !
Earlier ( before CityBird was founded ) they worked with Martinair from Amsterdam.

I don't think TUI would mind some extra pax onboard Sobelair (if they keep the name and don't change it into TUI Belgium or Hapag Lloyd Belgium).
