December 2001 marks a decade since America’s most proud and historical airline ceased operations. The world’s most experienced airline had it’s wings clipped on this day after negotiations broke down with Delta Airlines, for which had promised to purchase the airline and manage it as Pan Am 2 in a cooperative agreement that would have seen the airline keep it’s name flying the remaining Latin American network feeding Delta’s domestic service.

Of course, Delta Airlines was not really to blame for Pan Am’s demise, for the airline had severly inflicted it’s wounds upon itself for a very long time. The airline, which represented the American logic of globalization proudly displayed it in it’s blue globe logo of not just being the American airline to the world but the airline that flew the world. It’s once impressive worldwide route map was many years ahead of it’s time and only a few airlines such as British Airways can ever come close to replicate it.

I will always remember that day on December of 1991, when I came home from the 7th grade to turn on CNN’s moneyline and to hear that Pan Am was no more… I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I quickly put in a blank tape in my VCR and taped all the news reports about the demise of my favorite airline. Till this day, I still have the tape and it’s hard to believe that I am now a grown person and that I was only a kid when Pan Am’s ceased operations. How time flies! Yet, till this day, whenever I see those stylized PAN AM words in old pictures, it still brings back the sense of astonishment that I felt as a little kid as they represented the greatest airline and the empire it stood for. The World’s Most Experienced Airline was Pan Am…

The airline industry and the world would not have been the same if it weren’t for Pan Am. For whenever you fly a jet, it was Pan Am who pushed the aircraft makers to develop the technology to do it efficiently. Whenever you fly a jumbo jet, it was Pan Am who ordered it to be built. Whenever you can afford to travel internationally, it was Pan Am who made it possible for the ordinary person to fly. Whenever, you fly across the Atlantic, It was Pan Am the first who flew the first commercial plane across the pond. Whenever you fly the Pacific, it was Pan Am who developed the technology to do it. Whenever you fly in many parts of the world, it was Pan Am who thought your airlines how to fly... Because it was Pan Am, who established the standards of Aviation.

Great post!! Can anyone explain me what's the deal with the pseudo "Pan Am" airline currently operating out of small airports like Gary, IN, Salford, FL, etc. I would appreciate the response a lot.  Smile

Thanks!

AMX, you should be able to find most of your info at
http://flypanam.com , or by searching on here. Pan Am 3, as it's sometimes called, comes up around here quite often.
Next flight.... who knows.
