AMS is only summer service, while MAD is year round. They mention that both markets are underserved due to the demise of C3K. We will see...

Is Air Canada going to offer the same "charter fares" as Canada 3000? I doubt it!

It is unlikely that Air Canada will offer charter fares on a scheduled service. Canada 3000's service was a charter service booked through tour operators at the tour operator's fares. Air Canada's service is a scheduled service at the scheduled fare level.

Air Canada has not have sucess on routes that dont feature a hub on the other hand, other than Italy flights.

AC had cut YYZ-CPH, claimed YYZ-MAN as low-yield, YYZ-AMS the same...

They wont survive.

And, back to the first point, why not BRU? The SN YUL-BRU service was a successful one for SN, rumour has it that they actually made money conncecting those 2 French speaking capitals. BRU has a lack of transatlantic service at the moment and AC would have no competition between BRU and Canada (something that they usually like)........the AMS market is already crowded and dominated by KLM.

YUL-BRU is also a bigger market than YYZ-MAD..but hey, AC wants to make a profit!?

What do these people do? Lounge around the mahogany boardroom, announce quaterly losses, laugh, have a drink and pass around a bong, and decide to re-launch service to obscure, money losing markets? After the tough decisions are out of the way, do they dial up Airbus and order a couple dozen pizza- i mean, aircraft? Once the entire board is completely baked, thats when they decide to start up a couple discount airlines just for shits and giggles.

Maybe it's the senior execs closing their eyes and shooting darts at a map of the world (after the bong of course).

What next, Kabul ?

It is great to see AC come back to AMS. AMS has been loosing some intercontinental carriers over the past few years. I hope the route will work now. Too bad that it is only going to be a summer service to AMS. But maybe they can be more succesful in this market now that Canada3000 doesn't exist anymore. I am not sure but I think Martinair pulled out of the Amsterdam - Toronto route last year or 2 years ago (not sure though). But it will be very hard to compete with KLM's dominance on the Amsterdam - Toronto route.

Best of luck to AC anyway.

YYZ-AMS makes sense with the C3 demise. YYZ-MAD is a little more curious. C3 did not fly to MAD (to my knowledge).

For the record, Montreal is not a French-speaking capital.

C3 did in fact serve Madrid, but not year round. Summer loads were quite strong to my knowledge, but I don't think it would do so well in the winter time. Malaga was a good money maker for C3 in the winter though. The route was served by the Royal A310's which were quite appropriate for that route.

However, it seems to me like more of a charter airline market, rather than something Air Canada would serve. Unless of course, they are using the A319???  Big grin hehehe, j/k of course.

KLM seems to make enough money on AMS-YYZ (and AMS-YUL for that matter) to keep the route going, so that begs the question "why can't AC?" Presuming they can't, I don't think it's a question of the route, but rather AC's general incompetance. If they can't make money with a near monopoly in Canada, then I doubt they'd be able to do it elsewhere. Btw, YUL, wasn't YYZ-CPH a bit of a hub flight w/the SAS presence at CPH?
Also, anyone remember good 'ole YOW-AMS on a KLM 747....those were the days...

The answer why AC can't make money on AMS-YYZ all year around is simple. None of the Canadian airlines have ever managed to get the high yield business traveller (they always opted for KLM). Thus the Canadain airlines are stuck with the low yield tourists and they don't travel very much after September.

Air Canada cannot sustain a daily Toronto Rome flight in the winter (4 weekly now), and they are supposed to make YYZ-MAD work? Its an excellent charter route, and I would urge TS to grab it, but AC would be served using their planes else where..

Cap'n Dan - I will also call the YYZ-CPH service for a hub flight. CPH is the main hub for SAS and as both AC and SK are members of the Star Alliance the YYZ-CPH route was a connection from one Star hub to another.

Btw - AC plans to restart the YYZ-CPH route from April 2002 starting with five weekly 767-200 flights and going up to daily from the end of May.

Bobnwa,
living in USA, you must know that there are others country that yours.
I love USA, for vacations : 22 times just for fun not for work.
For you where is Budapest or Tallinn and not Talin!
Brussels is the political capital of EU just like your DC.
Air Canada flew to Brussels in 1996, close the route and then SN launched the daily flight to Montreal.

Then your remark is just STUPID
and not cool for the belgian, so sad after the shutdown of SN!

The Ams-Yyz route was successful over the summer, and when it is re-instated, it will be successful again.
