Possibly Midwest and/or Aloha. I'm not sure how the tax laws worked for a fiscal year, but perhaps Boeing and whatever airlines are in final talks regarding orders will do a press release before the year is over. Another good reason for Boeing to make an annoucment soon is to build up their image & order backlog...good for the stockholders & the travelling public. Just my two cents. Regards.

Isn't Aeromexico evaluating the aircraft?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

We can bet for sure that many airlines which now fly MD80/90 will soon retire
those airplanes and replace them with 717. It ceartainly would make sense, since
the DC9 series has given over 35 years of reliable service and I imagine transitioning
from MD80's to 717 should be very easy.

Yes, they want to replace their DC-9 with 717 because in 2004 the DC-9 won´t be able to fly because the goverment won't let AM fly that kind of aircraft.
Anyway first the goverment has to sell the airline, so until that I don´t know when are they going to place an order for the 717.

The B717 is much smaller than the MD80/90. Airlines will need the B737 or the A320 family to replace the MD80/90. For thin routes, the B736 or the A318 would make more sense than the B717 for those airlines.

That's true, but it's stil a perfect replacement for DC9's. Also, I think they may
consider a stretched version if orders pick up. A stretch should be fairly
easy to do, since it's basically the same step as was stretching DC9's to MD80's.

Boeing will never develope a 717stretch or "717-300", they fear it might be a competitor to the 737-700. I've got the feeling that they still consider ex-MD aircraft as competitors. Why did they stop the MD-11 production so early? I know, only few airlines had demand for further MD-11. Still, there were some (Cargo) airlines willing to place further MD-11 orders, but Boeing stopped the production.

I'm always surprised that so many people on airliners.net are in the know (and certain) about what "Company A" or "Airline X" will do in the future.

One thing is certain...Boeing will design/sell airliners in what ever configuration the market demands. If that's a stretch 717 (unlikely, I agree)...than so be it.

I meant stretch by 50 seats or so, to give it the same capacity as
MD80. That model won't even come close to 737-700 in size.

As for MD11, I hear it sucked really bad. It supposedly had poor handling
due to reduced empennage.

Dont think any order is coming for the 717 at the moment.......all of the rumored potential carriers are not in the market at the moment; AC has enough aircraft on the ground and lots of debt, NW will wait and see for at least a few months and stick with its revamped DC9S until the industry improves, AM is not going to do anything at this moment until tourism from the USA normalizes, and I do not think that AQ is going to go with the 717 - although it is the perfect aircraft for their inter-island services, AQ has let it been known that they do not want the exact same aircraft as their direct competitor, Hawaiian.

Boeing is giving the 717 some more time, they must know something, and expect something major in the future, otherwise, the line would have been shut-down. Eventually, there may be major orders from NW, AM, AC or others (whoever was a big DC9 customer now or in the past is a potential target). The 717 will also fill a niche between regional jets and mainline airliners, some routes will outgrow regional jets in the jets.......of course, the A318 is also coming, but, in my opinion, that airliner will fill a different role for very thin longer routes that by -pass hubs which should develop in the future.
