To UnitedFan And All ROC Spotters!

Sun Dec 16, 2001 4:21 am

Dear Gang,

As Charlie Brown says, "Christmas time is here," and at ROC that means bigger cargo planes!

Have any unusual biggies been flying into ROC this season? I won't be home from DC until late next week, so I haven't been able to look for myself. I'd love to see Kalitta/ AIA L-1011's like we had a couple of years ago. Maybe FedEx will upgrade to an A300 or MD-10 for the season?

Thanks for any reports!

Jim

I saw a DL MD88 here today (12/25)I haven't seen one here since last February! N925DL (1997 colors). Not too exciting,I know but very rare visitor here-usually only see 727's from DL.I still haven't seen that USAir A321 yet!

Things have been pretty standard on the cargo front this Christmas season. Fed Ex did run an A300 and 727 in place of the A310 one night last week, but that's the only unusual thing I've seen. The US Air A321 was a one time change of equipment special, it's not scheduled that way. And it looks like US Air will resume 3 flights a day to DCA beginning in March, using DH-8's of Allegheny.

Now that I've been home a few days I've been by the airport. As I stepped off my DeHavilland from BWI, the FedEx A310 pulled out of its berth and taxiied right by my gate! About 10 am. What a nice surprise upon arrival!

Are there two A310's coming in a day now? One day I saw it in the morning, and saw another one in the evening. No other strange visitors though. I've seen all the usual suspects of both cargo and pax variety.

Mike...I saw on the US Airways website that they're starting DCA flights with the 3 DH8's, as you mentioned. I wrote to Slaybaugh about this, because it seems to me ROC is getting shafted. I flew these flights regularly before 9/11 when they were 733's, and they were always at least 60 percent full, usually much more.

There's no way, even after 9/11, that 3 DH8's per day are going to be adequate for demand on that route. Sounds to me like US is using 9/11 as an excuse to squeeze all but the highest paying pax off the route. I'd sure like to fly on a proper narrowbody again on that route. DH8's get old after awhile.

A Question About ROC Airfield..

Wed Dec 26, 2001 3:33 pm

It looked to me during my past two trips to ROC that there was some kind of construction going on off the end of Runway 10. Is a blast/ overrun pad being put in? I checked on the NOAA airport layout site last week. The Jeppesen-style airfield ROC layout diagram now shows an extension off the end of 10. The extension is shown in gray, not black. Gray suggests an overrun pad, not active runway extension. Looks to be about 1000 feet.

The online Democrat & Chronicle hasn't had anything about this. Anyone have the scoop?

Jim,

The construction off the end of 10 is indeed an overrun area, and it was finished late Oct I believe. The overrun contains a soft concrete type substance that will stop aircraft landing long and running off the end of 28 by allowing the wheels to sink right down into it and decelerating the plane in a moderate distance.

As for the DH-8's on the DCA flights, it's a shame I agree, but not unexpected. US Air has already withdrawn about 20 of the 40 F-100 fleet, and about 8 of the 31 MD-80's. In the next few months they will all be retired, and with the loss of 71 mainline aircraft it was inevitable that ROC would see commuters replace the mainline jets on the DCA flights. Beginning in January, one of the 4 daily mainline PIT flights is being replaced by a DH-8 also, which isn't good news.

One bit of good new though: The Blue Angels are coming back for the ROC airshow June 22 and 23 of next year!!!! They were here in '99 and headlined an excellent airshow here. The last 2 years there have been no headliners and the airshows just weren't up to the '99 standards. Looking forward to an awesome show once again in 2002!

Ooohhhhh, the Blue Angels! They were awesome in '99! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and there will be more commercial planes on display. I loved sitting in the Captain's seat in that Delta Shuttle 727!
