Forget BA's "Union Flag"!

Thu Jul 29, 1999 5:41 pm

I just saw some pictures of recently painted BA planes, wearing the design called "Union Flag" which has been chosen to replace the World Images. I must commit, painted on the Concorde, it really looks nice, but painted on B747s, B767s or others it just looks ridiculous. People cried for the British flag, but people, what is it which they call Union Flag? It is three stripes, not more. It's far from being a British flag, the only thing which comparable to the Union Jack are the colors red and blue. That looks that boring, it looks like BA had to find a quick decision and so they painted something on the plane which is nothing: No World Image, and never a British Flag. Nothing will ever reach the pride of those nice World Images.
I just can't believe that people accept that helpless painting, it really seems even if BA flies a completely white tail people would be satisfied: "The main thing is the World Images are off the planes!" I call that ridiculous.
Before flying such a strange mixture "flag", why doesn't BA paint the real Union Jack on the tail, as Virgin did on the Winglets? That would be ok, even I as an old "World-Image-Lover" would accept it.
What do others think?

Udo, I really don't mean to sound rude, but this topic has been discussed so much, that many people are just fed up, and don't care what BA does with it's stinking tails.

There will always be people that love the new images, others hate it. What is certain, is that approximately half of BA's planes will retain the new ethnic images, others will display a new stlye Union Jack.

Personally, I think certain images (Benyhone, Colum
and that Indian design) are quite attractive, others not so attractive.

Hi all

Personally, I am not fed up with discussing the BA World Images at all.

I think the Union Flag looks really good.

I also like Benyhone - Mountain of the Birds, Colum, Rendezvous, Colour Down The Side and the Swedish FlowerField (is this name correct?)

No matter where in the world you are, there will be one photographer saying "I haven't got that one yet"

This topic has indeed been discussed up and down, but not from this angle, Tailscraper.

It is lamentable that BA passengers and the British public find BA's celebration of the diverse world it serves insulting. It is equally disappointing that BA succumbed to such severe conservatism. BA's World Tails serve(d) as an expression of pride in the fact that BA, from its London base, unites the world on a daily basis, and are, in that symbolism, much more than bombastic artwork on aircraft tails. It's a shame that few people appear to have the intellectual depth to realize that.

Hello Udo,

I agree with you, the "world colors" are very nice, and those made BA planes so famous and unique! I never saw the "BA Union flag" on other planes that on the Concorde, but I would really find it a pity if the World colors would dissapear!

'World Tails' Disappearing Eventually?

Fri Jul 30, 1999 5:26 am

Would someone please clarify something?

I'm hearing the following:

That BA's fleet will consist of a large number of a/c painted with the new 'Union Jack' design and the remainder in various 'world tails'. But now I get confused: some say that all of the a/c will eventually be Union Jack, others that some sort of mix will remain in effect. Has there been a definitive decision on the part of BA?

It has been difficult to get the proper info on what BA is doing with their tails. Will some stay will they all be changed. I can tell you though that the in-house magazine of BA says that all of the tails will be repainted unlike the previous reports of a half and half mix.

I love this neverending topic myself. I do think that the new "Union Jack" flag looks weird on the tails other than the Concordre. I loved the World Images because they were interesting, even though if they were downright UGLY (some). British Airways is truly the WORLD's airline and not just Britian's. I think it would be okay if they painted the aircraft that have not been painted yet with the World Images in the "Union Jack," but if BA needs to repaint a World Images aircraft, they should keep the World Image. This is truly a "thing" that I will share and share with my aviation-loving children in 15 years when they don't exist... because it was/is so neat.

BA (and PJ) Give The British Public A Bollocking

Fri Jul 30, 1999 8:06 am

Probably in the long-term abandoning the World Images will be seen as mistake, someone else will do it and have the balls to make it work. Whether they admit it (or know it), BA will repaint everything with the Union flag. Having half the fleet carrying the flag and the other half carrying all that other stuff is the worst of both worlds. As it is I hates the Union flag on Concordes but I love it on the rest of the fleet (love that red tailcone), but I still thought that the World Images was the best thing ever (I could go on for hours about how much I loved it) and I hate the fact that the new livery (which is OK) has happened BY DEFAULT. Meanwhile, they have an ad campaign running on British TV with the legendary American author PJ O'Rouke talking about the English (You have more rain than Borneo. You sunbathe in your clothes. You prefer a cup of tea to sex. Your national dish is curry.), then at the end he says that last year, 17 million "Johnny Foreigners" chose to fly BA, making it the world's airline, not just ours. Behind him (he's in a departure lounge) is a BA 747-400, but you CAN'T SEE THE TAIL. So they're swinging back towards the worldwide vibe again, but I think it's a final pop at the Brits who were so against the World Images, rather than an attempt to restart the concept.

But BA Is British

Fri Jul 30, 1999 12:53 pm

People fly BA because its British. Yes,they probably serve more of the world than any other airline, but you could also fly Air France,or Luftstansa to some of those destinations. But to fly BA is have that England flavor around you. As corny as that may sound Cedarjet, its true. If BA wants tp be known as a "world airline",then fly the UN flag.

Very Well Put, Granite!

Fri Jul 30, 1999 2:38 pm

I agree with you entirely! Very well said!

Now that BA is dropping the tails, I am especially sad, as I have not taken many shots of the new BA tails for one reason...they were to be on those tails for quite some time...oh well!

I personally do not think the 'new' tails look that bad...I prefer the World Images, but this to me is an improvement over BA's 'classic' livery!

I agree, William. I have to say, once I got over the shock, I quite like the worldly tails. But the best way to become known as a world airline is to be seen and recognised all over the world, not by just painting something "worldly" on your aircraft. Even if they kept the One World tails but also put a consistent BA or British logo on them it would help.

It was a visionary idea badly executed. And William, you're right, people choose BA cos it's British, not cos it's the World's Favourite Airline, or whatever. For foreigners it's a slice of the Queen, Austin Powers, formality, service, one of the world's most powerful and important nations (once upon a time anyway), etc etc. For a Brit returning home, once they get to the jetway they're halfway there. The check-in staff at JFK may be Americans but once you get to that aircraft door it's a cute English girl from Surrey with a nice accent and pale complexion. I don't know why the tail colours have anything to do with that perception, they're only visible from other planes and maybe from the gate at a very oblique angle, but it obviously IS important, so I do understand the backlash.

I recently flew BA for the first time, and as a foreigner ("outsider" in the UK) I chose it not because its British but because it offered me a very good fare and a reliable service. Once onboard, the crew were from various nationalities (British, Brazilians, Argentinians, Italians) and we got constant announcements in five languages (english, spanish, italian, french and german). Trully a world airline.
