United Storing 747-400's?

Sun Dec 16, 2001 4:44 pm

Heard through the grapevine that United already has 3 747-400's in storage in the desert, and that more can be expected to go there soon. Expect 777's to start taking some routes from the 400's. I won't be surprised to see United gradually start to further decrease the number of 747's they keep in their fleet.

Actually, the current number is 5 747s that are parked, 2 of them have come out of storage to fly re-instated routes.

The 747s that are down in storage are on long term parking, not retirement. They are however being kept in the mix. Every few weeks, they get rotated back into service, to balance out the usage of the planes.

The 777 has taken over very few 747 routes. Some of them have been swaped from a 747 to a 777 just because the loads demand it, not because we are parking 747s.

United has not decreased the number of 747s in their fleet. The number still stands at 44, with some that are parked. If you were to pull up their status in Unimatic, under Current Routing, it would say something along the lines of "Long Term Storage-VCV." That does not mean that the plane is out of the fleet.

Curious to know which the fifth one is; Skynet lists FOUR 744s parked at Victorville (VCV): N173UA, N183UA, N184UA and N186UA. Any idea when N224UA and N225UA will enter service ? Thanks!! The777Man

N183UA And N184UA

Mon Dec 17, 2001 2:57 am

Hello,

ILUV767, aren't N183UA and N184UA in storage since early October?

How long would they remain before being replaced by other 747-400s please?

Thank you,

Best regards,
Alain Mengus

It will be a while, because they swaped some parts off of those planes to two other 777s that were out of service. When they get parts for 2824 and 2825, they should enter service.

I wasnt sure if the parked 747 number was four or five. I dont have the list in front of me. My post was based on memory.

Thanks for the info!! I think that UA will park more 744s as 2824, 2825 and newer 777s enter service. Any idea if UA will take 2826 and 2827 in Jan, 2828 in Feb and 2829 in Mar ? Thanks The777Man

This morning at SFO, I saw at least 4 UA 744s sitting on the flight line near the maintence hangar next to runway 28R, where before I've seen one or two at most.

Hmmm...

They withdrawn some 744 flights to LHR and FRA.
Also former 744 Asian destinations are now served by 777.

I love the way so many carriers are using 9/11 as a reason to store aircraft and fire people.

Every person I know thats flown long haul in the past weeks says they are FULL !!, thats including flights to and from the states.
