"BA-AA Pull Out Of Global Tie-up Plan" (FT 7/29)

Thu Jul 29, 1999 11:55 pm

....my topic is today's Financial Times' headline. Both airlines announced it before the US avaition authorities refused the alliance in an official statement to be announced soon. That is also a major blow to the future of OneWorld. I guess in that case Swissair can be a major winner by getting together with AA, with AA using Brussel (sabena's hub) as its European hub. On the other hand, if the Alliance is totally destroyed, the other player can go either to Star or the new Delta/Air France grouping to change the dynamics of tie-ups....What do you guys think? It is going to be very interesting to see what will happen...

Swissair is reconsidering its hook-up with BA and AA due to the fact it might stay with Delta.

This is good news for BA and AA. Both have aspirations (or should that be 'delusions') of world domination, and to try and unite would be a nasty power-struggle that would end sooner or later, the sooner the better (shorter court case). KLM and NW have an alliance that works cos neither are the biggest in their respective markets. Narrow escape for both airlines if you ask me. BA/AA NO WAY, as Virgin say.

you might be right, but SR has already some code sharing arrangements with AA. And if it can get only AA without getting invloved with BA, they might chose it over an alliance with Air France-- which will dominate a non-EC and smaller airline (swissair) The news that SR did not want to get invloved with BA/AA was before today's blowing news.

I'll bet Branson (chairman of Virgin Atlantic) was peeing in his pants when he heard that news!
