Korean Air MD-11

Fri Jul 30, 1999 3:57 am

Does anyone have any information on the Korean Air MD-11 that went down several months ago. For some reason CNN, NTSB's website, nor even Boeing acknowledged it. Maybe because the only fatalities were the crew and a few people on the ground, it just didn't gather the headlines of several hundred people perishing. Anyway, I would appreciate any information that someone could provide.

Thanx!

There are photos of it on this this site. That should have the reg. number. I think it crashed in Shanghai.

Yes, i saw where it did indeed crash in Shanghai, but I am curious as to why it crashed. Apprantly there was some sort of explosion shortly after takoff, but I can not verify that.

Any and all help appreciated!

I have heard that there was a control problem, the last thing on the CVR before it went down was the pilots discussing a trim problem. The inquiry is looking into two possibilities, (1) a failure in the trim tabs or the all-flying tailplane, or some other control problem in the elevators; or (2) movement of cargo in flight. I believe 30 people on the ground were killed.

check this site from the NTSB: NTSB.gov/aviation/months.htm,,,,,,,,,,,,and you'll see the months listed. Click on April 1999, then look for April 15, and you find an entry for the MD-11 HL7373, and 8 people total were killed. The report isn't finished/posted yet, though they normally take quite a while to finish these reports, plus the Gov't of the country it crashed in will do the final report, I'm sure. If you can't get the page to pop up,,use the NTSB main page and click on the appropiate page from that point, then bookmark the page.NTSB is the National Transportation Safety Board for all you youngun's out there.
