British Airways is to cut round trip fares between London and New York on its supersonic Concorde service by more than GBP£4,000 (USD$5,800) for a limited period at New Year.

The UK airline is likely to start a scramble when the seats go on sale, on a first come first served basis, on Wednesday, December 19.

Standard round trip fares on Concorde, which has only recently returned to transatlantic service after last year's fatal Air France crash near Paris, are GBP£6,819 plus taxes. The airline says its special offer of a GBP£2002 ticket, a saving of around 70 percent, is to celebrate the arrival of the year 2002.

Those who get to the head of queue can travel on Concorde flights which depart from London Heathrow, 10.30 am local time, on December 30 and 31, 2001. Return flights are restricted to departures from New York JFK on the first four days of January, 2002.

In addition BA is offering one-way tickets from New York at GBP£1,500 with return flights in its Club World class. One-way from London on Concorde will cost GBP£1,750 with a Club World return flight.
