How Does Southwest Board?

Wed Dec 19, 2001 11:32 pm

Hello,

It's been 9 years since I've flown Southwest Airlines. I'll be flying them this Friday from MAF to HOU. How do they board? I've heard that you need to get a number.

Do you go check-in at the main airport counter to get a boarding pass? Do you go directly to the gate to get your boarding pass? Or are there just no boarding passes altogether? Where do you get your "number"?

Thanks for any assitance.

Gate agents give out numbered plastic cards. Passengers are called for boarding in groups of 30 at a time, and take whatever seats they can.

Didn't realize there were any airliner fans out in Midland/Odessa. I am originally from LBB. You'll be better off if you get there at least an hour before departure and hopefully, you'll get boarding pass 1-30. 31-60 isn't too bad either.......

No more "moo" than any other boarding scheme, in my experience.

And, by virtue of fresh equipment, fine spirits and good attitudes, a lot more "Ooh!"

Are the boarding numbers handed out at the ticket counter or at the gate? If the latter, how long before departure?

Do you get a better number if you get there earlier? (You semed to imply that, JayDavis...and I am not from MAF originally...CDG rather).

What's your favorite seat on the 737?

The boarding numbers are handed out at the GATE, usually one hour prior to departure. Sometimes, they start a bit sooner.

I'm not so sure about the last part. Whenever I've flown Southwest, the gate agents have been very precise with regard to the one-hour rule for handing out the boarding cards. Sometimes there would be people in line at the gate agent's stand before the one-hour point. I should point out that these observations of mine pre-date September 11, when people were still flying. Maybe things have changed since then - in particular, it's unlikely that anyone would bother to line up to get one of the first 30 boarding cards when the planes probably aren't even carrying that many passengers  Sad

In response to the last post,
I flew Southwest the weekend before Thanksgiving. Both ways there were at least 60 people standing in line at the gate agent one hour before departure. They were strict in observing the 1 hour rule. The planes were 100% full.

Trust me, there are more than enough people to far surpass the 1st 30 people! Atleast out of Tampa for the most part we go out very full.
We have been instructed though to open all flts 1hr and 15 minutes ahead of time now. When I am working 2 overlapping flts (usually in the morning) I will open that 2nd flt as soon as I can get the line down from the 1st flt. Why let you guys stand there and stare at me for 20-30 minutes? People are for the most part thankful when I do open early  Smile
I believe I can fly.....
