The Fedex A380 order has always baffled me. The pax orders by VG, LH, AF, SV, QF are based on a combination of slot restrictions, marketing/image, national pride, unit cost reductions on those routes.
The Fedex A380's will serve routes largely without slot restrictions and/or with off-peak arrival/departure times. Also, the marketing/image issue is a non-starter with a cargo airline (or less so than a pax carrier). While there will be unit cost reductions on the flight segments replacing the MD-11's, cargo A380's will need alot of GSE (ground service eqt) to serve each A380 station.
I just can't see the numbers adding up for the A380. Fedex states that each A380 will replace 2x MD-11's. The MD-11's can then be used for future expansion....but Fedex just cancelled it's planned purchase of 19 ex-SR MD-11's....wouldn't a better option have been to take the 19 used MD-11's than 10 new A380's?
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
