Alaska Bumped To #11?

Fri Dec 21, 2001 4:33 am

With the merger of Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha, it will create the nations 10th largest carrier- thus putting it into the catagory of "the majors". Currently the #10 spot is occupied by Alaska Airlines who will, even after the merger still have more aircraft but will apparantly be bumped down to #11, taking it out of the top 10 US airlines list. I realize that there is more to the "size" of an airline than just a fleet, but it appears that both in fleet and # of employees, Alaska would still be larger than the combined Hawaiian/Aloha company.

I know (being a former AS employee) that Alaska covets being considered a major, will being bumped to #11 really put it out of this league or should we now consider the majors the top 11?

Any thoughts?

The DOT's definition of a "major" carrier is one that has over $1 billion in revenue annually.

Therefore, AS would still be considered a "major," regardless of any consolidations of other carriers.

Alaska is currently the nations 9th largest carrier. I believe they will stay in this position, and HA/AQ will be #10, and ATA #11.

Is this correct? I know that Alaska was the 10th largest airline before the TWA/AA merger, so I see no reason why they shouldn't be the 9th largest airline now. Alaska has seen a larger proportional year-over-year traffic increase than most carriers...

I believe Agnus is correct. From what I've heard Alaska is larger then ATA who is the number 10 carrier rigth now. Don't worry, you'll still be in the top 10, plus with the way carriesr are free falling right now, Alaska could even move up.
