Monarch Airlines DC10-30

Sat Dec 22, 2001 2:15 am

What's happening with the DC10 of Monarch ?
I hear that it will/is retired. If it is why so soon ?

This DC10 first flew with Zambia Airways as N3016Z in Aug.1984 to Dec.1994. (10years)

The airplane is only 17 years old. Why retire so soon ?
It has been with Monarch for no longer than 5 years.

It isn't really cost efficient when compared to other aircraft in Monarch's fleet.

I think it's still here in sunny MAN, chatting to the CMM A330 in storage corner.

It's a shame. I had some very good and memorable flights on that airplane at the time when it was with Zambia Airways.
I flew from and to, JNB, LUN, LCA, ROM, LHR.
It was named 'Nkwazi' in Zambia, meaning Fish Eagle.
I remember the good old days with the flight attendants serving dinner, Chicken or Beef and Beers went for US$1.00 and wine at $2.
I was also on the first commercial flight from Lusaka (LUN) to Larnaca (LCA) in Augast 1984.

Hello their,
i belive the monarch DC10-30 has been retired or will be soon retired and flown to the desert. Since the A330 has entered service with monarch the DC10-30 has mainly been used as a standby aircraft, and with the current economic climate in the aviation industry, is it viable to have such an expensive asset?
Also the DC10-30 was due to have a heavy maintanance check this winter, which because of the aircrafts age would of most likley been costly to the airline.
regards bungle.

BUNGLE WROTE: "Also the DC10-30 was due to have a heavy maintanance check this winter, which because of the aircrafts age would of most likley been costly to the airline."

I ask anyone out there that knows about aircraft ages,
Is a 17 year old DC10 an old aircraft ? How can a 1984 model be old. I know planes out there that are over 20 years and over 25 years old and are still flying.

So, will this DC10 go to the rubbish now ?

Why not give it to me ? I'll be happy to have it. Maybe I will not fly it but it would be nice to put it up somewere and turn in into a restaurant-bar.

I use the staff west car park at MAN almost every day and the Monarch DC-10 has been sat by the perimeter fence there for at least the last 6 weeks, only being moved to give way to BMI's spare A330 (G-WWBD) and Canada 3000's impounded A330 when they and several other stored aircraft had to be moved around recently. About 6 weeks ago (ish) I saw it operate a flight but even before that one flight it was sat there for a good while.
I can't imagine MON keeping this a/c just as a standby a/c now, especially with it having no commonality to their Airbus/Boeing fleet, and having to keep crew checked on the type.

World Airways' DC-10 N117WA has been stored alongside Monarch's DC-10 at MAN for some weeks now.

Has anyone any idea what it is doing in Manchester of all places? It's a long way from home!

This is what I've gathered about that DC10:

"The ex World DC10 N117WA has changed reg and is Now N117GB and registered to Aviation Finance and Leasing, It should be out of the hangar Saturday after noon and put on stand till the New Year then it will go to Venice for Freighter conversion."

Also, note that bmi A330 G-WWBD has been exercising itself recently as a sister ship (G-WWBB I believe) went tech.

I spoke to a Monarch engineer today, and he told me that the DC-10 is in the Monarch hangar at Manchester having its titles/logos removed. Monarch are definately finished with this aircraft as its flight engineers have apparently been made redundant.

It's a shame for that DC10 and its flight engineers.
I have a feeling that it prob will be made into a Boeing MD10 (Cargo).
