If you are talking about Continental's "proud express" service between Houston's Intercontinental and Hobby Airports, I have no idea. It sounds pretty stupid and pointless to me.

It was a shuttle that ran for years between HOU and IAH, and was very, very popular for many, many years. But then again, that's before both of you boys were born.  Big grin

I thought it was a good idea. How many flights leave Hobby to Europe or Asia!? How many people want to drive to DFW? Just take the shuttle from DAL-IAH! I'd do it! Just instead of using a slow bus, they use a fast plane!

Doesn't CO (or at least Express) still run flights from IAH to HOU and other airports nearby?
I recall pricing some flights to Houston last year and it was actually cheaper to connect through IAH and go to HOU than to terminate at IAH with Continental (thanks Southwest?). Very popular with connecting traffic going downtown....

Continental, it wasn't from Love Field to Intercontinental, it was from Houston Hobby to Houston Intercontinental. It was origianlly a DC-9-10 that ran the route, and eventually the "Houston Proud Express" was replaced with COEX turboprops. CO shut down Hobby completely after 9-11. At one time, CO had flights from HOU to EWR, CLE, IAH and LAX. Now, the only other airport served by CO is COEX flights from IAH to Ellington Field (EFD).

They should put up that HOU-EWR on 735 again. I know it never flew but that would be convenient and probably easier for upgrades!

I've Flown HOU-IAH Many Times

The flights from Hobby to IAH are convenient for those living on the southside of Houston. When the flights were still active-pre-9/11-they flew EMB120s and 737s. The flight is included in the fare of your connecting flight. It makes since because you get 500 onepass miles for a 15min-20min. The Ellington Field service is very convenient because it serves Clear Lake and Galveston area and parking is free at EFD. The 737s that ran IAH-HOU were extensions of other flights from IAH.

There were never any thru flights running from somewhere-IAH-HOU. They were strictly shuttle flights. And if you were flying from anywhere to HOU through IAH, there was no extra charge for the shuttle flight.

And yes, despite the fact that CO no longer flies to HOU, there's a big MX base there. It was going to be outsourced a few years back, but the employees convinced Gordon that they could do the job just as cost-efficient as outsourced labor. They proved to to Gordon, so the MX base continues to be run by CO employees.

Ever try driving from Clear Lake or Friendswood to catch an 8 AM flight at IAH? The city limits of Houston cover over 500 square miles. (second only to Los Angeles) Our traffic is often worse.

The HOU and EFD flights are among the few good things to come out of the Lorenzo era.

The 737-300s that flew from IAH to HOU originated at LGA. The flight left IAH at about 9pm. The 737s have been off of the skeds for some time now however. You are right that the Brasilias do not run any other flights.

Sounded like a good idea. There are other inter-city routes too. Continental Connection still flies FLL-MIA. Needless to say, only once a week (Wed) and only in one direction. Chalk's flies FLL-MPB (Downtown Miami) twice daily. I believe UA used to fly SFO-OAK (anyone confirm this), and they still fly LAX-ONT. Any airlines ever try any other inter-City routes? JFK-EWR? DFW-DAL? ORD-MDW?

There is no JFK-EWR service.

By car how far away is Hobby from Intercontinental? Is it like flights from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, about 50 minutes by car.

I remember that United Express used to have flights between CLE and CAK. Most people these days would consider the two cities part of the same metropolitan area...Akron being about 60-75 minutes away from CLE and Canton 75-90 minutes.

TWA, 50 minutes from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale? Sure from downtown to downtown, but they are only about 20-25 minutes apart by car. CO's 1900D flight takes 25 minutes, for some reason. DL also used to fly the MIA-FLL route with 763s!

It's probably about an hour from Hobby to IAH by car (depending on the miserable traffic.) CO stopped the shuttle for several years during the many bankruptsies. Then, in 1994 or 95 they re-inaugurated the service an initially called it the "Hobby Hop." It was flown in the beginning by Continental Express ATRs. The occasion was marked by a small celebration and some promotional scenic flights with the restored Continental DC-3. I was lucky enough to have been one of only two male flight attendants ever trained to work the CO historical society's DC-3, a former Trans Texas aircraft. We had quite an audience each time we taxied back up to the terminal at Hobby. Sorry....just had to gloat a little since that was one of the coolest things I've done in my career.  Smokin cool
