Why Is ATL Busiest Airport In World?

Sun Dec 23, 2001 6:40 am

I just hear that Atlanta was the busiest airport in the world. is that true? I would think JFK or Chicago or LAX or Heathrow or Charles De Gaulle in Paris would be the most popular can someone please explain to me why and how Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world. Thanks

ATL is not the busiest airport in the world, its heathrow, onver 60 million people fly to/through heathrow each year. ATL is one of the busiest, not the busiest.

I believe it's mainly because of Delta's mega-hub in Atlanta. I think Delta and Delta Connection alone has over 850 flights from ATL, bringing millions of connecting passengers into the hub every year. In addition, AirTran Airways has their main hub in ATL. Combine that with the fact that the city of Atlanta is a thriving business center, which keeps the demand for airline service from other airlines also very high, and you've got the bussiest airport in the world.

ATL is busiest in terms of aircraft movements however many of these are small regional and domestic flights.

LHR is the busiest in terms of handling international passengers.

Go down to ATL and see all those widebodies doing short hops to Florida. Then you'll understand why ATL is up there on the list.

Well, it depends how you define "busiest".

"Busiest" can be fedined in terms of passenger volume, passengers served, takeoff/landings per second, per minute, per day, etc...

Different airports will hold different titles depending on which definition you use.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

LHR T5 should bring it right up there! Didn't they say a possible extra 20 million a year? If ATL holds steady then maybe an other than US airport can officially be busiest!

Thje issues with NEw York is that you have three airports serving the city where as in Atlanta you only have 1.

JFK, LGA, EWR split the content of JFK's demographics. I bet if you added the passenger throughput combined of all three airports, you see that it may surpass ATL in number of passengers. However you would probably need to counter this figure in terms of percentage of land mass served or by total population size.

JFK is prestigious in that all major airlines fly there, but they only send 1 or flights a day there. JFK has a lot of O&D traffic.

ATL on the other hand has a lot of connecting traffic due to all the connecting flights that delta serves through the hub. Airlines like United more even distribute banks of flights through its major hubs like Chicago, Washington, LAX, SFO, and Denver. While Delta, even though having major hubs at SLC, DFW, CVG, JFK and BOS, sends the majority of its connecting traffic through ATL

LHR may have the most international passengers, but ATL is consistently the number 1 airport in terms of total passengers!

Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world. And just a note since 9/11 Miami is the busiest international airport in the country.

How long has ATL been 'consistently' number 1 for passengers..not that long i believe! Didn't ORD have that title for a long time?

Some clarification is needed as we are using different definitions here.

ATL is bigest in terms of OVERALL pax. However, about 80% of that is connecting traffic.

LGA is biggest in terms of O&D pax.

LHR is biggest in terms of INTERNATIONAL pax.

Arsenal@LHR: That means that 20,000,000 people more COULD travel through there every year. That's how many it could handle. ATL is designing/building a new terminal to handle more pax too.

Don't forget that there is a limitation on how many more flights can take off with Terminal 5. That will limit pax.

ATL not the biggest anymore:GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) -- Passenger traffic plunged more than 30 percent at U.S. airports in September, knocking them from the top of the world rankings of busiest terminals, a global airport association said Thursday.

"The tragic events of September 11 coupled with the worldwide economic slowdown" to produce a worldwide decline of 15 percent, Airports Council International said.

Tokyo's Haneda was ranked as the world's busiest airport for the month, rising from sixth by bucking the trend and recording an increase to 5.18 million passengers, 3.5 percent higher than the previous September, the council said.

Yeah, but that was September, when 10% of the month was gone from the shutdown, then you have the small number of pax returning in the first couple of weeks afterward. Oct. and Nov. should be better.

Take a look, from Jan to Jul of this year
http://www.airports.org/img/ti_traffic.gif

For the first six months ORD has claimed the number one spot for aircraft movements, yet ATL is still king in Pax. For the person who stated 80% of ATL pax are connecting, thats wrong too,O&D is about 40%,that leaves 60% percent connecting. Atlanta is a business center with many high yield frequentflyers, and ATL is Delta's cash cow.

And Arsenal@LHR,don't talk about LHR one day being the busiest when the NIMBYs around the airport will not allow a new terminal to be built without restrictions. Hey Arsenal,do you know what LHR needs more than T-5? RUNWAYS! LHR is the world's gateway, and is being choked by too little concrete. At the very least LHR should have four parallels runways like ATL. Even Government officials are concerned about LHR loosing its gateway status to beautiful Schiphol or Paris De Gaulle airport.

Seems like it is a pride thing for Arsenal.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think there are a few years it went back and forth between Atlanta and Chicago. Its the government in the UK, and all of the people around LHR complaining about noise that will keep it from being number one in total passengers in the world. Yes, it is the largest international hub, and will probably be that way for a long time, until it reaches its max capacity, and another European hub has to begin absorbing passenger growth and eventually surpasses it.

Why not go to:

http://www.airports.org/traffic/passengers.html/ ?

This is the website of Airports Council International and there you can see the official rankings by pax, movements & cargo for yourself.

Personal guesses and/or prejudices won't then come into the argument.

To Arsenal@LHR,

LHR with new T5 but without a new runway cannot grow to become the busiest world airport.
Also it's likely to think that the European leader airport in the nearest future will be Paris CDG.

Thanks Perth for posting that link,I tried to post it twice and it didn't work.

Ditto what everyone stated about LHR,without more concrete Heathrow aircraft operations growth is stagnant. What a shame, with extra runways it would not only grow but cut down on delays.

Hey Arsenal, since you live in England what groups are actively pushing for more runways,in the news you only hear from the NIMBYs? If ORD can build more runways(something I thought WOULD NEVER HAPPEN),so can LHR.

That's an informative link you posted, Perth.

Some general observations can be readily made as to what constitutes a highly-ranked airport by pax movements .....

1- has to be a hub
2- has to be a strong O&D market in its own right (ie large business center)
3- has to be relatively free of competing airports in their geographic area
4- has to have a robust infrastucture and growth potential

Now, let's look at the busiest airports in light of above....

ATL -- 1- very strong, 2- so-so, 3- very strong, 4-very strong
ORD -- 1- very strong, 2- very strong, 3- competes with MDW, 4- very strong
LAX -- 1- very strong, 2- very strong, 3- competes with ONT, SNA, BUR, 4-very strong
LHR -- 1- very strong, 2- very strong, 3- competes with LGW, STN, LTN, LCY, 4- limited growth potential

Cheers,
Pete

It is home to Delta, the largest pax carrie in terms of pax carried.
LHR is a lot bigger than CDG (about 20+m people) and is know as the biggest international airport in the world.

Dauphin...I read the article a while back and remember it was for the month of september...at the end of the same article (from a different paper) the numbers are expected to come out so that for the year ATL will , once again, be the busiest airport in the world. Hehe, Arsenal@LHR, little bit competitive are we?=)

why dose it have to be just one airport in an area whay not add up all airports serving the one area and find out which market or area has the most pax going through it for example New York which is the bigest busness centre in the world

It's amazing that ATL does it with only 4 runways. DFW has 7 runways and they are building an 8th one. DFW had the title several years ago.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

Bmi330 - ...for example New York which is the bigest busness centre in the world

As I said earlier, even all 3 NY airports combined will barely equal Atlanta because NY is not a big hub.

ATL is the busiest in the world. Heathrow is the busiest International Airport in the world (for international traffic). ATL is the busiest mainly due to Delta and AirTran's large presence there, as well as Atlantic Southeast, and the scattering of other airlines serving it.

Go to the link of the Airport Council, the numbers Jan-Jul are stating ORD the busiest in aircraft opts. Untill the Aug-Dec numbers come out ORD is again, on top of the throne. Mayor Dailey of Chicago stated he wouldn't be satisfied until it was..............he got his wish.
