Kept the aircraft from running into the hill.

Does anybody know what happened to the checkerboard now that Kai Tak is closed. Is it still up on the hill?

I've always been told that pilots would 'aim' for the checkerboard on finals to make sure that they would be lined up for the runway when they made the turn.....

I remember reading that before the IGS was introduced, the pilots would fly at a heading of 088 while aiming at the checkerboard... and before they crash into the hill, they would execute a 47-degree right turn.
