Tue Dec 25, 2001 6:10 pm

Just wondering if anyone knew of any new flights into Australia over the next year, or planned in the future?

Thanx in advance

If we want rumours (including the most far fetched - I include every whisper I have heard over the past year):

LA to SYD
EK to ADL, BNE
KL back to SYD with MD11s
LH back with A340s
AR to resume services to SYD (already occurred)
NH to resume services in its own right - more long term
VS to fly London-BNE/SYD
Air Lanka to resume flights to SYD

Of course there is Australian airlines. And Virgin Blue may well begin trans-tasman even other flights to the pacific (Fiji?)

More sadly, OA is set to pull out.

thanx aussie, but what airline is LA? I doubt LH will return as they say they are doing extremely well codesharing with SQ and TG. But with Sep 11 occuring, u never know where they will refocus on. KL well is a different story, as I do see them returning in the future but to SYD and MEL combined. NH will return, as it tries to strengthen its position agains the JAl / JAS merger.

I think KLM is pretty happy with their code-share services with MAS. Currently, KLM codeshare on all of MAS's flights to Australia from Kuala Lumpur. Their Melbourne office was already closed down, not too sure about its Sydney office though. With MAS as a code-share partner,. it enables KLM to have prescence of more cities in Australia instead of the usual Sydney and Melbourne. If KLM were to resume their services into Australia, why with a MD-11 instead of a B747? Which stopover city they are going to use? Kuala Lumpur?

Regards and merry Christmas!

i think it highly unlikely that KLM will resume service to OZ. As stated, they are doing very well thankyou from their agreement with MAS. They did use to have an agreement with AN for domestic services from SYD, obviously, that is no more. The only way KLM would return to SYD/MEL is if it ended its relationship with MAS. A tie up with BA, on the other hand, as has been suspected for some time, may bring back a service to OZ, either by KLM or even QANTAS, here's hoping!

Regards

There is no way KLM will return to Australia.
In fact, the route was under Amsterdam's microscope for 2 years before they finally pulled the plug. In KLM's case, it doesn't make economic sense to bring an aircraft down from Asia to Australia especially as the yield ex Asia is better.

I have heard third hand that KL is conmsidering 3x weekly flights to SYD via KL (codeshare with MH of course) using MD-11s. However I do stress this is 3rd-hand info!!!

LA is Lan Chile. Such a flight would make sense - it would obviously be a codeshare with Qantas and would provide a vital link between the oneworld hubs of Santiago and Sydney. It would also cash in on ever-expanding Australia-Sth America traffic which currently is only catered by the SYD-AKL-EZE flights run by both QF and AR.

NH returning to Australia in the medium (and maybe even long term) is probably not going to happen.

NH recently announced that they are closing down their Australia representation. I can't remember, but I think that World Aviation are going to act as a GSA for them.

Hardly the type of move an airline, such as NH, would make if they were going to consider starting services up in their own rights.

Other rumours:

Lion Airlines (Indonesia) are interested in flying into Australia. Probably PER and DRW. Would be great to see the Yak-42 flying sked services, but they would probably use A310/737 equipment

AW Airlines (Indonesia) were wanting to fly to PER & MEL, but this was before they got rid of their A310s and replaced them with 737s, but still possible to fly the 737 down here....Garuda do it.

Qatar Airways to SYD. This is still being heard around the ex-pat cabin crew based in DOH.
