love those new delta colors on it  Big thumbs up

What would have happened if they would have continued to make trijets? I know im getting unrealistic and technically out of hand but for real people what would have been if right now in the modern days of all glass cockpits and Fly by wire technology (assuming that they would be fuel eficient)  Big thumbs up how would the next generation trijets look? lets get imaginative people lets say 727-300 hey wat the heck 727-800  Big thumbs up how about MD-12 or MD-14. How would your dream trijet be?

The MD-11s are not going away anytime soon. Remember, Delta will have theirs for the time being, not to mention UPS & Fed Ex have a few MD-11s hanging around still. Plus Fed Ex still has a rather large fleet of 727s & DC-10s yet. Also, the USAF wil have their KC-10s for a long time to come. My 'dream' trijet would the L-1011-500 with today upgrades.  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

I'd love to see something crazy like a 3 jet-engine regional jet (kinda like those bizjets)... 1 engine on each wing, and one on the tail (of course, unless you want to put it on the nose, hehehaha)..

And being creative, I'd also like to see a tri-prop used by the airlines... like an EMB-120 Brasilia or something with a really tall tail, with the 3rd prop mounted somewhere up there..  Laugh out loud

:D

Serge.

A 3-engine regional jet already exists. In fact, it was the first regional jet ever produced. The name:

Yakovlev Yak-40

As to what is happening with other tri-jets.

Aviakor (in Samara) is currently upgrading Tu-154s to bring them up to current standards. A couple of airlines have already had conversions done, and more are lined up for the future.

Saratov Aviation Plant is also still working on the upgraded Yak-42D. Not at home at the moment, but I have details direct from their PR guy as to the current status of that project. Will try and remember to post them in the next day or two.

Trijets have come and gone, just like Airlines around the world. We shall see new ones once again.

Yeah, this is a good question! Are they used more for freight these days than passenger service? Why do some airlines favour using them in their fleet & others like QF have never had any (to my knowledge)?

FlagShip , what are you talking about "the MD-11 will be around for a long time" Its already out of production . The last MD-11 was delivered to Lufthansa Airlines , Delta is using the MD-11's on long haul services to asia. And also with some european routes . However they will eventually replace the MD-11 with a more efficent B777 . The only role left for the MD-11 is a freighter . Its the most environmentally friendly freighter in the world!

TriJets have become twins because of the more advanced engines; so perhaps what´s a quad today will lose an engine some day, too.
